Tracking changes behaviour!

Most of us know that physical activity is a critical factor in our health. It improves mood and anxiety and decreases perceived stress levels; it lowers blood pressure and improves cardiovascular health. It increases muscle mass (key for healthy aging) and strengthens bone health.

But, it's really hard to create and stick to an exercise routine! Thanks to evolution, humans are programed to try to conserve energy which means that most of us are not motivated to exercise! If you are trying to be more active, you need a strategy!

Here's one that I LOVE - tracking! The image for this post is a calendar from my home. My family set out to be more active this year and to help, we started tracking our activity on this calendar. The symbols mean different kinds of activity for different people in our family. There is something very satisfying about adding a check to the calendar after a workout. And something inspiring about walking past it and knowing that you could add one. It's turned into a bit of friendly competition.

This isn't a new idea. The calendar below it is the Halton Hills Public Library Summer reading challenge - kids track their reading over the summer which encourages them to read more.

Tracking a behaviour can change the behaviour. This is challenging for me as a researcher - I often want to measure what people are eating or doing in their normal lives - but as soon as people know their behaviour is being measured, they change it! This makes research more difficult but it can be used to your advantage if you're looking to increase your physical activity.

Consider buying or printing a calendar to track your exercise this month! Or learn more by reading Atomic Habits by James Clear.

New Publication Alert!

Diet cost is a perceived barrier to diet intervention that is often cited. Participants in our recent EASe-GAD trial told us that they spent less on food during the study; however, no methods existed to formally answer this question.

We developed and pilot tested an approach to collecting and analysing diet data so that we can compare baseline and intervention diets in future researach studies.

This project involved researchers from Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, CMCC, Ontario Tech University, Bastyr University, and RAND. The project received a pilot grant through the RAND REACH Center.

I grew this in my garden! Have you ever heard of a kohlrabi? Its from the same family of vegetables as cabbage and broccoli. The taste and texture are similar to broccoli stems but a bit sweeter and juicer. All of the veggies in this family are rich in fiber. If you see one at the grocery store or farmer's market, give it a try!

New EASe-GAD publication! This study was the first to provide a nutrition intervention to adult women with generalized anxiety disorder. We found that this approach was highly feasible and acceptable and that participants reported an average 55% reduction in anxiety symptom severity.

We also conducted focus groups to gather richer qualitative data about the experience of participants. They told use about benefit that they attributed to the intervention, barriers and facilitators, as well as suggestions for how to improve the program in the follow-up study that we are currently preparing for!

Grant writing flowers! I submitted an application this week for the CIHR Project grant competition - it's for a project to build on the work we did with the EASe-GAD pilot study. We are planning to do a larger study, with an even stronger design, longer follow up and economic evaluation. My sweet kids and husband bought me these beauties as a bit of encouragement as I worked on the last few details before submitting.

Ever wondered whether you should believe the latest "breakthrough" study? This accessible presentation will demystify how health research is done. We"ll walk through the main types of studies - from lab experiments to meta- analyses- and discuss what each can (and can''t) tell us about our health. You'll leave with a clearer understanding of how to spot trustworthy science and avoid being misled by sensational headlines.

New publication alert! A scoping review on the impact of garlic on mental health symptoms, published in the new journal, Nutritional Psychiatry.

Highlights:
-This scoping review sought to identify and map the clinical and mechanistic research on the impact of garlic on mental health.

-Nine human experimental studies, three observational studies and 19 animal studies were identified.

-Most of the human studies reported a benefit; however, several used garlic in combination with other natural health products.

-The animal studies reported mechanisms such as an impact on inflammation, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter pathways and the gut-brain axis.
