Is this you? Have you caught yourself doing any of these?👇
No judgment here. Parenting is hard, and we've all done what we needed to do to get through mealtime. But if picky eating seems to be getting worse instead of better, these habits may be keeping your child stuck.
❌Bribing or pressuring"Just one more bite!" or rewarding eating can actually increase resistance to new foods.Instead: Offer a few balanced choices at meals and let your child decide what and how much to eat.
❌Only serving their favorite foodsSticking to "safe foods" can cause that list to become even smaller over time.Instead: Include at least one familiar food alongside a new or previously refused food at each meal.
❌Grazing throughout the dayFrequent snacking can make it harder for kids to recognize true hunger and fullness.Instead: Aim for structured meals and snacks so they come to the table hungry.
❌Hiding foodsFor children who are hesitant around new foods, discovering hidden ingredients can feel like they've been tricked.Instead: Get them involved in preparing meals and exploring new ingredients together.
❌Using screens at mealsScreens may make mealtime easier in the moment, but they take away opportunities for children to learn about food, tune into their hunger cues, and connect with family.Instead: Turn off the screens and enjoy conversation, music, or a simple game together.
You don't have to change everything overnight. If your current routine is working for your family, that's okay. But if you're ready to make a change, start with one small habit and stay consistent.
