– Activity
The positive benefit of activity and exercise on our mental health has been well established but until I felt the benefit myself, I didn’t appreciate it. It was once I started swimming that I appreciated the mental stillness I got through physical activity and would sometimes crave my time in the pool to allow me to have a break from all the challenging thoughts. I didn’t realise at the time how the lack of activity over lock down had contributed to the extra stresses I feel now, but have been very grateful for the recommencement of the Masters sessions Louth Swimming Club. Due to the months of decreased activity and awareness of the lockdown situation it has prompted me to try another form of exercise that I never thought I would…… running, with the couch 2 5K app. I am appreciating the similar mental stillness during and post exercise, and am enjoying the flexibility and lack of facilities needed, as well as surprising myself by running for longer!
Often the difficult bit with exercise and activity is being openminded and brave enough to get started and then building things up so they are manageable. Small changes like taking the stairs not the lift, going for a lunchtime walk, taking a ball to the park, dancing at home, can help build the path to bigger challenges like getting involved in sporting activities.
One of the things I am passionate about as a physiotherapist is helping people to find ways they are able to exercise and maintain their activities, be this, looking at community groups, helping people access gyms, reviewing activities and exercises in your home, or currently via online exercise classes. If you would like any more information please feel free to get in touch, and please add your own comments, ideas and suggestions regarding activity.
