What is the difference between RUBLE ( long sound U, Russian money) and RUBBLE ( short U sound, rocks and building pieces left after a bombing)?

It has been said that long ago, some people considered it bad luck to allow a word to end in V or L, so they started slapping a decorative little "E" on the end of words. Lo and behold we now have words ending in BLE, CLE, DLE, FLE, GLE, KLE, PLE, TLE, and ZLE. These are called "stable final syllables". When you see them, break them off the word with a half bracket and look at what is in front ru ble or rub ble

If the front syllable/part ends in a vowel (a/e/i/o/u) it will have a long sound: rifle, table, gable, ruble, ogle

If the front syllable/part ends in a consonant ( any other letter that is not a vowel) the sound is SHORT. bubble , sparkle, puzzle.

Oh the wonders of the English language. Follow us for more madness in reading and spelling...

So, we have heard about the "bossy E" that is seen at the end of a word and makes the vowel ( a/e/i/o/u) in front of it "say its name"...

It is the difference between can and cane, mat and mate, hop and hope, kit and kite, hug and huge.

THEN WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON WITH WORDS LIKE LOVE, DOVE, LIVE, HAVE?

So glad you asked.

Some say it is because the E in these words is a "decorative E" and not a "bossy E". Long ago, I have been told (Truth? Legend? Who knows?) that the Vikings were superstitious and thought that allowing a word to end in V or L was bad luck. Hence, the words haf or hav and dov or luv/lov had an E slapped on the end as a decoration.

So there we have it. More madness from the English language LOL

Rules for breaking up longer words:

Basic: Look for the first two vowels, How many consonants (other letters) between? If it's 2, divide down the middle. The sound of the first vowel is short. furnish fur/nish

If it is 1 consonant between the vowels, lean to the left and see if that works. The sound of the first vowel is long and long vowels say their names: lotus lo/tus

If there are consonant buddies ( sh, th, gr) keep them together:
fishing fish/ing program pro/ gram

Remember, when vowels are close together the first cone says its name... or they blend. oa says O ea says E
kit= short sound kite= long

Advanced - break up longer words by taking apart the prefix and suffix first. Then look for the root or root word inside, using the basic rules to break up words. preventatively=
pre ven ta tive ly

Happy reading and spelling!

Recent survey on the declining of reading and its impact on all of us. What do you think? And by the way remember that you can get audio to accompany text with companies such as Learning Ally. Audio books to ACCOMPANY a text, not replace it.

A major study finds reading for pleasure in the U.S. has dropped 40% in 20 years, raising health and cultural concerns.

About school vouchers in Texas. The general public can apply for 10,000 for a private school cost...but for a student with a disability it climbs to up to 30,000. You must have a diagnosis by a professional (in the case of Dyslexia an educational diagnostician, educational psychologist or school LSSP.)There is a form for that professional and a teacher to sign. If you are homeschooling right now join a co-op with one or more certified teachers to do that. The school needs to be able to provide specialists for services. Watch the private school's all scramble to provide specialists at school now!!

Big changes are here for one of the big cognitive assessments used at times to identify specificlearningdisability: Woodcock Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities.Upside? This "gold standard" test has expanded assessment sets, specifically for dyslexia. Downside? The tests are mostly computer screen based, and recent research reveals greater comprehension with hard copy text rather than computer screen. Woodcock Johnson has gone the way of the Weschler in the computer base testing. Kauffman or KABC is still paper n pencil n hands on for ages to 16 years.

DARS is the Department of Assistive Rehabilitative Services, usually housed in state programs such as Texas Workforce. If you are going to school you can apply for help with cost of books or tools of your trade, and if you are unemployed they help with job placement. Hold your ground though with training help... if you want to be a nurse, don't settle for them offering training as a medical assistant. You will need recent ( within 3 years) certification of your dyslexia. THE RE-CERTIFICATION IS WORTH IT. Write [email protected]
