If you know a young man (lets say age 35 or below) who is thinking about starting testosterone therapy because he needs a "boost" - this seems especially common in weightlifters and oilfield workers in west Texas, in my experience - he needs to know that this is NOT a good idea. "Previous exposure to exogenous testosterone or anabolic steroids, at any point in life...may cause secondary hypogonadism (low T) and infertility, an effect which can endure up to 2 years and in some cases may be permanent." (Asian Journal of Andrology, 2015)

If a young man truly has symptomatic low T, I suggest a trial of Clomiphene therapy - a more physiologic way to achieve normal testosterone levels, available through this office (off-label use, clomiphene not FDA approved for this indication)
