In June, Congress approved the restoration of the 988 LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services Program after the administration stopped the dedicated LGBTQ+ youth resource last summer. Until the service is back up and running, you can still access support from the general 988 line where someone who will listen is only 3 numbers way.

You can also use any of the resources we shared earlier this week, like Trevor or Trans Lifeline, if you need the support. Talk about what is going on, someone is there to listen.

We are so thrilled to share that Dr. Ofole Mgbako has been appointed as Vice President of Research, Education and Sexual Health at Callen-Lorde Community Health Center.

Dr. Mgbako brings an extraordinary combination of clinical expertise, research leadership and deep commitment to health equity, most recently serving as Associate Professor of Medicine and Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Section Chief of Infectious Diseases at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and Director of NYU/Bellevue’s HIV Equity Research Program.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mgbako has focused on biobehavioral interventions to improve health outcomes for racial, gender, and sexual minoritized populations along the HIV prevention and care continuum. His work examines how structural racism, homophobia, transphobia, and other systemic traumas impact HIV-related outcomes, and he has developed implementation strategies to expand equitable access to new prevention and care innovations. He is an affiliated investigator at the Center for Drug Use and HIV Research and a recipient of the United Hospital Fund Health Equity Fellowship.

In his new role at Callen-Lorde, Dr. Mgbako will lead efforts to expand our research portfolio, strengthen clinical education and training, and advance sexual health services—ensuring that innovation and learning remain central to our mission of providing affirming, high-quality care to the communities we serve.

Here's another opportunity to challenge stigma around our sexual health: September is Sexual Health Awareness Month! Now is a great time to meet with your provider and start a conversation about your sexual health. Together you can set up a consistent cadence for STI testing and explore prevention options, such as doxyPEP or long-acting injectable (LAI) PrEP.

Remember: prevention, testing and honest communication with your partners and healthcare provider are the keys to your sexual health.

Every September we bring awareness to two forms of cancer: ovarian and prostate cancer. Anyone over the age of 40 should be screened annually for either, with people between 40 and 44 at the highest risk.

Early screening is essential if you have a strong family history of these types of cancer, Black ancestry, or known genetic mutations. Detecting prostate cancer in the earliest stages yields a 99% survival rate, and detecting ovarian cancer in the same period yields a 93% survival rate (although it's important to note the health inequity that only 20% of cases are discovered at this stage).

Located in NoHo, Lore features a large Finnish sauna, a smaller infrared sauna, and a communal cold-plunge bath in a pleasant, well-curated and designed space.

About every hour during peak time there is an Aufguss session, a guided meditation led by a sauna master who uses breathing, aromatherapy, and movement to help you relax. Contrast therapy (exposing the body to extreme heat and cold) has many health benefits including enhancing circulation, reducing muscle soreness and fatigue, and boosting mood and energy.

The saunas and pool are shared spaces, but Lore uses gendered locker rooms for changing before and after your session. Just know let the staff which changing area you'd feel comfortable in.

Weekday sessions before 4 pm can be booked at a reduced rate, making it perfect for if you work in nightlife or before you head to your 9 to 5.
