A true and funny story for anyone who’s ever thought they were the “best worst” and the time my most dreaded fear came true (gasp) and I survived. 😅🎉😂

My dear friend Sonia and I were emotionally manipulated by a Waymo the other day and I write about it in MY NEW SUBSTACK! It’s called I’m Not Your Therapist and there’s a link in my bio. I will not post things like Five Ways to Set A Boundary With Your Optometrist but if you subscribe you’ll receive honest reflections from someone who’s trained to notice psychological patterns, nerds out over psychoanalytic theories, cries at dog videos and dabbles in the dark arts of the Real Housewives. Also, what your therapist might be thinking. See ya on the stack!

I love this kid. 19 and terrified in her best Clinique Superberry lipstick. Those eyebrows! Before 90’s overplucking took over and I turned them into what look liked two s***m on my forehead. Anyway the terror unfortunately stuck around for many years but I still traveled and moved around to different cities and places looking for my people. I still put on the leotard and danced! Somehow I made it to Los Angeles against all better judgement and THANK GOD I did. Shout out to my wife (who when she sees these pics asks ‘you really didn’t realize you were q***r yet?’) and my chosen family and my lifers who fielded distress calls from this kid and comforted and soothed her and cheered her on as she relentlessly questioned and doubted herself. I didn’t know I could trust my heart and intuition and desire yet. What a relief to know that now. xo

My co-host and I had the pleasure of interviewing Frank Anderson, MD (author, trauma therapist, educator, advisor on the movie Inside Out to name a few of his many hats) on this week's podcast .

I have to say it was a total honor to deep dive with this amazing human being. Frank was so open and vulnerable as he shared his insights on grief, the loss of a parent, growing up q***r in the midwest, the intersection of parts work and spirituality and the ways we evolve, transform and heal through the challenges life throws our way.

It was an honor to converse about all the ways our life deepens and unfolds when we're willing to go inside.

On the latest Yes Collective Podcast episode we talked to the accomplished entertainment executive turned mental health advocate and best-selling author, Tara Schuster!

She just released Glow in the F*cking Dark: Simple Practices to Heal Your Soul, from Someone Who Learned the Hard Way -- an amazing memoir slash emotional healing guide. It’s really beautiful and powerful and you don’t need to take our word for it.

It received glowing endorsements from Glennon Doyle, Adam Grant, Chelsea Handler, the creator of IFS, Dick Schwartz, and many others. Previously, Tara served as Vice President of Talent and Development at Comedy Central, where she was the executive in charge of one of our favorite shows of all time, Key & Peele.

In this episode, Tara shares what it was like to reveal so many intimate details about her life so freely in her books, what it actually means to glow in the effing dark, how emotional healing has transformed her dating life, and of course we get into her drama-infused, stint as a bartender on the Vanderpump Rules Aftershow. You won't want to miss this one!

We’ve got a new yes collective podcast that dropped today. Justin and I are chatting about cycle breaking.
We get into the hardest cycles to break, and also talk about family “heirlooms” we want to keep.
I also reveal my favorite family recipe heirloom (hint: it involves a crock pot. Naturally. Because…Missouri).
I hope you’ll tune in!

That time when my golden milk matched my chipped nail polish AND my jacket. LOL. Happy accident.

In other news, this HSP is down for the count with a bad cold. But, I must confess, when I'm sick I'm grateful for the chance to have ‘permission’ to shut the world out and bask in some quiet. I’m glad I can give my body the things it needs to heal, it’s so important.

I wanted to quit therapy.

Well, a part of me did at least. And of course, being a therapist I thought, "That’s interesting. Talk to your therapist about it." A long time ago it never would have crossed my mind to tell my therapist I wanted to stop seeing her.

But now, I knew that talking about it was the only way to find out if quitting was the thing to do or if there was something deeper going on. “So…I’m noticing that I want to quit therapy with you,” I began.

To which my therapist replied “Well, that’s the thing about what we do here together, we get to talk about it. Tell me more.”

Leading up to this conversation, I had been reading The Divergent Mind by Jenara Nerenberg. I was quickly engrossed in it on a deeply personal level.

What stood out in particular was when Jenara explained “masking” which is all the ways an individual learns to present themselves on the outside so as not to express the experience they are having on the inside. I had simply become disconnected from how much I do it myself around the sensate sensitivity I experience. I thought I’d healed all the shame around my sensitivity, but I realized I had been masking with my therapist—and shame was at the heart of it. I hadn't been honest about times when I was overwhelmed in session but wanted to look like I was just fine.

After presenting my findings to her we discussed ways in which I had used masking in my past, to which I began to cry.

Then she said “Jenny, your sensitivity matters to me.” At first I didn't believe her. How could somebody care about something that I hated about myself for so long? As we kept talking. I slowly believed her more and more. And then, I noticed the urge to quit therapy was gone.

And through that discovery, I started to notice the ways masking showed up in other parts of my life.

Masking is complex and not all bad or all good. But removing my mask with the ones who care about me the most made way for repair, connection, understanding, empathy, and healing. I’m so grateful for a second chance with my sensitivity and how it feels to navigate it while in relationship with others.
