This journey has become very personal to me. I transitioned Vazendah to support dementia caregivers because no one should have to do this alone. If you know someone caring for a loved one with dementia, I’d appreciate you sharing this page with them. ❤️

Do you know why it is so hard to take care of yourself?

I’ve heard so many reasons.

“I don’t have enough time.”

“I’ve spent so many years taking care of everyone else that I don’t even know where to begin.”

And then there’s my favorite reason

Good old Irish guilt.

If I took time for myself, I’d immediately think, I should be doing something for my husband… or my family… or the laundry… or grocery shopping… or cleaning the house… or crossing something else off my never-ending to-do list.

What I’ve learned is when all I’m doing is everything but take care of myself, I get snippy. I get frustrated . I feel overwhelmed.

And that’s not the person I am—or the person I want to be—for myself or for my husband. That’s why I made a commitment to myself to take care of myself first.

Maybe you’ve felt that way too… not just once, but many times. Whatever your reason is , it’s preventing you from a better quality of life.

Promise yourself you will take care of yourself first

Not because it’s easy.

Not because it’s selfish.

Because its necessary

Have you ever been on an airplane?

Before every flight, the flight attendants tell us that if the oxygen masks drop down, put your own mask on first before helping anyone else.

Do you know why?

Because if you don’t have enough oxygen, you won’t be able to help the person sitting next to you.

The same is true for dementia caregivers.

We spend so much time making sure our loved one is okay that we forget to take care of ourselves.

I know… because I’ve done it too.

Today, make a commitment to yourself that you will learn to be your own caregiver.

The dementia journey is often a long one. If we don’t take care of ourselves—physically, emotionally, and mentally—we can become exhausted or even sick.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish.

It’s how you stay strong enough to care for the person you love.

That’s what Vazendah is all about.

Helping you remember that you matter too.

💬 I’d love to hear from you. What’s one thing you could do for yourself this week?
