I think children understand grief in ways adults sometimes overlook.

Not always through long conversations or obvious sadness… but through connection.
Wanting to sit where they sat.
Ride their favorite ride.
Keep talking about them.
Keep including them somehow.

Children don’t stop being children when they’re grieving.
They still laugh.
Still play.
Still make memories.

And sometimes, in the middle of all of it, they’re quietly missing someone they love very deeply.

I think sometimes people assume therapists have it all figured out.

But I’m also a mom.
A special needs mom.
A tired mom.
A mom who has cried in parking lots, managed meltdowns in public, felt overstimulated, questioned myself, and wondered if I was doing enough.

I know the joy.
But I also know the hard.

And that’s why moments like this mean everything.

Because when you’re raising kids with big emotions, behavioral challenges, neurodivergence, trauma, or complex needs… joy can feel hard-earned.

But it DOES come.
Sometimes loudly.
Sometimes unexpectedly.
Sometimes in the middle of a chaotic Disney ride with your kids screaming at the top of their lungs. 🤍

This is real life.
Not perfect.
Not curated.
Just real.

One of the most amazing local non-profits in South Florida supporting children entering and growing up in the child welfare system. I was honored to work for them for 2 1/2 years before expanding my private practice. This is my story they are telling, this is my lived experience.

Inside the System: An Adoptive Mom

She became a single parent through foster care adoption.
Each of her children came to her at different points in their earliest lives—each with a difficult start and incredible resilience.

She went into this journey expecting challenges alongside the joy. What she didn’t expect was how early and how intensely those challenges would show up.

Medical needs, developmental delays, and emotional and behavioral struggles that require constant advocacy—and constant reframing: this isn’t personal, it’s trauma
And the reality is—advocacy is constant. Appointments, schools, therapies, insurance battles—fighting every day just to make sure her children get what they need.

What she wishes people understood most is that love is essential—but it is not enough on its own. Post-adoption support is also limited. Access to specialized care exists, but it is often difficult to find, afford, or sustain.

And because of her lived experience, she stepped into private practice as a therapist—now supporting other families walking through similar journeys, just like hers.

And still, she says she wouldn’t change this journey. Because every child deserves a family that keeps showing up.

This month is National Foster Care Awareness Month.

An anonymous donor is matching up to $12,500—helping us reach $25,000 for families just like these.
