A traumatic spinal cord injury does not end at discharge. For many patients, that is where the real challenge begins.

This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of individuals with spinal cord injuries in Rwanda, focusing on what life looks like after returning home. The findings highlight a complex reality shaped by personal, social, and environmental factors.

On a personal level, many individuals face loss of income, reduced independence, and emotional struggles such as depression and loss of identity. Socially, support from family and peers plays a critical role in recovery, while stigma and isolation can worsen outcomes.

Environmental barriers were among the most significant challenges. Inaccessible homes, poor transport systems, and unsuitable assistive devices often limit independence and participation in daily life.

Despite these challenges, key facilitators emerged. Strong family support, access to health insurance, and peer support systems were shown to improve adaptation and quality of life.

The key takeaway is clear: rehabilitation does not stop at the hospital door.

To truly support recovery, healthcare systems must prioritise community-based rehabilitation, accessible environments, and long-term support structures that enable patients to reintegrate into society with dignity.
