Seen above is dry needling of the Vastus Lateralis muscle of the thigh. The local twitch response elicited within the taught band of muscle fibers or ‘knots’ are an involuntary spinal reflex which cause contraction and then relaxation of that muscle. Dry needling causes biochemical changes in the muscle when a twitch response is elicited which helps with the body’s response to heal the dysfunctional muscle.
