📱👓 Protecting our children’s vision, together!

Did you know that excessive screen time is linked to an increased risk of myopia (short-sightedness) in children? With more learning and play happening on devices, our children's eyes are working harder than ever before.

The 20-20-20 Rule for Healthy Eyes:
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 metres away. This simple habit helps reduce eye strain and may slow myopia progression.

Additional tips for parents:
•⁠ ⁠Encourage at least 2 hours of outdoor time daily
•⁠ ⁠Reduce near screen time to a maximum of 20 minutes*
•⁠ ⁠Position screens/books at arm's length from the eyes
•⁠ ⁠Ensure good lighting when using devices
•⁠ ⁠Ensure at least 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night
•⁠ ⁠Schedule annual eye exams

*Screen time guideline for kids under 12:
•⁠ ⁠Under 18 months old: no screen time (except for short video calls)
•⁠ ⁠18 months - 6 years old: under 1 hour screen time daily outside school
•⁠ ⁠Under 6 years old: don't leave screens on in the background
•⁠ ⁠7 - 12 years old: under 2 hours screen time daily except for schoolwork

Protecting our children's vision starts with small, consistent efforts. Let's work together as parents, caregivers, and schools to keep our children’s eyes healthy!

🎯 A South African First!

"Last Friday was a special day in my practice. We successfully completed South Africa's first ear reconstruction surgery using the Su-por technique at Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital."

This surgery provides a real, life-changing opportunity for our brave 15-year-old patient – born with microtia.

"To the incredible team of partners (Ear & Eye Clinic, Give an Ear Foundation, Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital) and professionals who made this possible, including my wife Dr. Therina Mol and Dr Tercia Tsakani Nkuna-Shilenge - thank you for believing in this vision.
