Last week, something remarkable happened at The Ear & Eye Clinic.

Dr Duane Mol and our theatre and nursing team performed the first three of 25 cochlear implant surgeries for the AboutSound initiative - the Mandela Day campaign led by AboutSound and Jacaranda FM's Good Morning Angels, which raised R2.5 million to fund implants for 25 patients.

On Wednesday, Jacaranda FM's Good Morning Angels broadcasted live from Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and raised R2,5 million for AboutSound, the initiative spearheaded by Mia le Roux to fund cochlear implants for 25 state patients.

With the devices already secured and the patients already assessed, the obstacle was theatre capacity.

The Ear & Eye Clinic is providing that capacity. ENT surgeon Dr Duane Mol and our theatre team will perform the first three implant surgeries on 23 July, continuing at three per month until all 25 patients have had their operation.

Congratulations to Mia le Roux, Martin Bester and the Good Morning Angels team, and every donor who made this possible ahead of Mandela Day 2026.

📱👓 Protecting our children’s vision, together!

Did you know that excessive screen time is linked to an increased risk of myopia (short-sightedness) in children? With more learning and play happening on devices, our children's eyes are working harder than ever before.

The 20-20-20 Rule for Healthy Eyes:
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 metres away. This simple habit helps reduce eye strain and may slow myopia progression.

Additional tips for parents:
•⁠ ⁠Encourage at least 2 hours of outdoor time daily
•⁠ ⁠Reduce near screen time to a maximum of 20 minutes*
•⁠ ⁠Position screens/books at arm's length from the eyes
•⁠ ⁠Ensure good lighting when using devices
•⁠ ⁠Ensure at least 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night
•⁠ ⁠Schedule annual eye exams

*Screen time guideline for kids under 12:
•⁠ ⁠Under 18 months old: no screen time (except for short video calls)
•⁠ ⁠18 months - 6 years old: under 1 hour screen time daily outside school
•⁠ ⁠Under 6 years old: don't leave screens on in the background
•⁠ ⁠7 - 12 years old: under 2 hours screen time daily except for schoolwork
