Why is blood pressure so important?

Blood pressure measures the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps and relaxes. It’s recorded as two numbers: the systolic pressure, when the heart beats, and the diastolic pressure, when the heart rests between beats.

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, which is why it’s known as the “silent killer.” If left untreated, it can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and heart failure.

Many factors can contribute to high blood pressure, including a family history, excess body weight, a high-salt diet, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, physical inactivity, stress and certain medical conditions.

Regular blood pressure checks can detect problems early, allowing you to make lifestyle changes or receive treatment before complications develop.

Why do we measure your waist circumference?

Your waist measurement tells us more than just your clothing size—it helps us understand how much fat is stored around your abdominal organs. This is known as visceral fat, and high levels are linked to an increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

For adults, a waist circumference of 94 centimetres or more in men and 80 centimetres or more in women suggests an increased health risk. A measurement of 102 centimetres or more for men and 88 centimetres or more for women indicates a substantially higher risk.

Even if your weight seems healthy, carrying excess weight around your waist can affect your long-term health. That’s why waist circumference is an important part of a comprehensive health assessment.

What does your BMI actually tell us?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a simple calculation that compares your weight to your height. It’s a useful screening tool that helps identify whether you’re underweight, within a healthy weight range, overweight, or living with obesity.

However, BMI doesn’t tell the whole story. It can’t distinguish between muscle and fat, or show where fat is stored in the body. For example, someone with a lot of muscle may have a high BMI but be in excellent health, while someone with a normal BMI could still have excess body fat and an increased risk of disease.

That’s why we also look at body composition. Measuring body fat, muscle mass and visceral fat gives a much clearer picture of your overall health and can help identify risks that BMI alone may miss.

Your weight is just one number—understanding what makes up that weight is what really matters.

Weight monitoring is one of the simplest yet most powerful tools for protecting long-term health. In South Africa, nearly 68% of women and 31% of men are overweight or obese, increasing the risk of high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Regular weight checks help detect early changes, guide healthier choices, and support better outcomes—before serious health issues develop.

Before we were doctors, before the white coats and long days, we were just little children… looking up to our dads.

They were our protectors, our providers, our safe place.
The ones who held our hands, picked us up when we fell, and taught us some of life’s most important lessons.

They shaped us with their love, strength, sacrifice, and quiet support in ways words could never fully capture.

As we look back at these beautiful memories, we’re reminded that so much of who we are today began with the love and guidance we received as children.

Today, we honour our fathers, and every father, grandfather, and father figure who continues to love, lead, and support their families with unwavering strength.

Thank you for the sacrifices, the lessons, the love, and the countless things done behind the scenes.

Happy Father’s Day.
Always loved. Always appreciated. Always remembered. 🤍

To every Comrades runner taking on the Ultimate Human Race tomorrow – good luck! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Months of early mornings, long runs, sore muscles, discipline, and determination have brought you to the start line. Trust your training, pace yourself, and remember that race day is simply the celebration of all the hard work you’ve already done.

But your journey doesn’t end at the finish line.

Recovery is just as important as training. Proper hydration, nutrition, rest, and listening to your body’s warning signs can help support healing and reduce the risk of injury after the race.

Whether you’re chasing a personal best, your first medal, or simply the finish line, we wish you a safe, strong, and memorable Comrades Marathon.

Run smart. Recover well. Be proud of every kilometre.
