I finished this book last year sometime and I never got around to sharing it.
If you have not read it, PLEASE do!

You learn so much from Dan Siegel!
Give him a follow … Dr. Dan Siegel

If you don’t get to the book… maybe this will inspire you…

“Imagine a peaceful river running through the countryside. That’s your river of well-being. Whenever you’re in the water, peacefully floating along in your canoe, you feel like you’re generally in a good relationship with the world around you. You have a clear understanding of yourself, other people, and your life.

You can be flexible and adjust when situations change. You’re stable and at peace. Sometimes, though, as you float along, you veer too close to one of the river’s two banks. This causes different problems, depending on which bank you approach. One bank represents chaos, where you feel out of control. Instead of floating in the peaceful river, you are caught up in the pull of tumultuous rapids, and confusion and turmoil rule the day. You need to move away from the bank of chaos and get back into the gentle flow of the river. But don’t go too far, because the other bank presents its own dangers. It’s the bank of rigidity, which is the opposite of chaos.

As opposed to being out of control, rigidity is when you are imposing control on everything and everyone around you. You become completely unwilling to adapt, compromise, or negotiate. Near the bank of rigidity, the water smells stagnant, and reeds and tree branches prevent your canoe from flowing in the river of well-being. So one extreme is chaos, where there’s a total lack of control. The other extreme is rigidity, where there’s too much control, leading to a lack of flexibility and adaptability.

We all move back and forth between these two banks as we go through our days—especially as we’re trying to survive parenting. When we’re closest to the banks of chaos or rigidity, we’re farthest from mental and emotional health. The longer we can avoid either bank, the more time we spend enjoying the river of well-being.

Much of our lives as adults can be seen as moving along these paths—sometimes in the harmony of the flow of well-being, but sometimes in chaos, in rigidity, or zigzagging back and forth between the two. Harmony emerges from integration. Chaos and rigidity arise when integration is blocked.”

Continuing with Emotional Regulation…

My very own term…

💛Validate to navigate💛

It’s important for our little ones to be able to understand what they are feeling by feeling validated in the feeling!

Help them name it (identify it)

“I wonder how you are feeling?”

“I feel frustrated, sad, angry, excited, annoyed, and so forth.”

“I wonder how that feels?”

“I wonder what is happening with your body?”

Once they feel validated, they can navigate it!
Alongside YOU!

Also, this works with ourselves too! (Caregivers)

Try it.

Feeling something big?… Get curious.

“Mommy/daddy/Mrs Brown etc is feeling a bit sad”

“What can I do to navigate this.”
~What will support me in this feeling?

As we create the support for our little ones, we can support ourselves too!

“I can breathe! Good long, slow deep breaths.
I can take some time for myself (read, sing, play/exercise)
I can go for a walk”

Does it always work this way?

No (my next post will touch on this very important “no”)

💛As always, consistency…

Some days you will feel like you’ve nailed it and some days you walk away simply feeling defeated, those days you fall asleep knowing you tried your best. 💛

With love and grace,
T 🌼

💛Felt safety💛

As I talk and share about these terms I encourage you as the caregiver to get curious as well 👀

Very much a part of the therapeutic process but also of our everyday world. So if we think of our little ones and their felt-safety, be it in the therapeutic play room or outside the room, we too, can take moments and tap in to this…

Felt safety- not the physical sense of it but rather our nervous system and what is being felt in the moment.

💛 A sense of safety as in a sense of security.💛

Am I feeling secure within this space or situation that I am busy experiencing.
Be it a conversation, a group meeting, a space (outside your home) or even an activity you are engaging in.

Get curious with what your body is telling you.

Feelings of contentment or quite the opposite- discomfort or even at times, a bit of chaos?

This all forms part of emotional regulation 🫶🏻

Happy Monday and wishing you all a “safe” week ahead

As I remind myself that feelings come and go, it is the same for our little ones 💛

Emotional regulation is something that is significantly apart of the therapeutic process

We, as caregivers all play a beautiful role in it, which I would love to share more about soon

Happy Thursday!

That pivotal moment that we are able to meet our children where they are at, they are able to step out, and work through their challenges in their own way and at their own pace.

I am often asked the question “What is Play Therapy?”

Or even… “So you just play with children” 😉

Why yes, and so, so much more! 🧠💛🫶🏻🙌🏾

HEY 👋🏻

Ever been that person (my case, mom 😉) hushing their child, what feels like constantly!

Our spirited, loving and deeply-feeling children, are exactly this!

They experience the world through every deep connection and emotion!

They are not “loud” because they “know it agitates people”…

They are loud because of how much they are feeling in that moment or the high sensation of that emotion or feeling!

What could these feelings be? Every single one we know of…

The easy ones and of course the harder ones?
Excitement, joy, happiness or sadness, pain, anger, frustration…

We can try help guide them through it (this can feel quite difficult for us too, at times, as their parents or caregivers) but until we start becoming curious about this, it’s going to feel even more difficult for them and ourselves!

Emotional regulation is close to my heart and something play therapy really helps support.

As time allows I will be diving deeper into this much-needed area of our little one’s lives (and even ours) 💛🙌🏻

Love, T 🌸🌼
