A psychiatric Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an objective, standardized assessment conducted by an occupational therapist to measure how a mental health condition or psychiatric impairment impacts a person’s ability to perform daily work-related tasks.
What it Measures:
Rather than evaluating physical lifting or walking, a psychiatric FCE specifically assesses:
• Cognitive Functioning: Attention, memory, processing speed, and problem-solving.
• Psychosocial & Behavioral Skills: Stress management, emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, and interpersonal interactions.
• Mental Endurance: The capacity to sustain focus and complete tasks over a standard 4-hour evaluation block.
The Evaluation Process
Evaluations generally take around 3 to 4 hours to complete and include:
• Clinical Interview: Discussing current mental health, medication usage, and symptom history.
• Standardized Testing: Utilizing specialized, evidence-based tools (such as the web-based Psychiatric Functional Capacity Evaluator (PFCE) or standardized personality and executive function profiles).
• Performance-Based Tasks: Simulating workplace cognitive demands to measure limitations.
Purpose & Outcomes:
The assessment provides an objective report detailing an individual's strengths and limitations. It is typically used to:
• Support disability claims or incapacity benefits.
• Guide return-to-work programs and vocational rehabilitation.
• Recommend reasonable accommodations or job modifications in the workplace.
