The garden is about to do the thing it does. 🌸

It starts quietly. A few weeks of green filling in where there was brown, and then all at once the beds are full, the fynbos is in colour, and the birds are loud enough from first light that you'll wake early and not mind at all.

It's 5,500 square metres, designed almost from scratch by Rene Slee, and the paths meander rather than go anywhere in particular β€” which is the point. There are old stone walls. There are nooks with somewhere to sit, positioned exactly where you'd want to stop. There's the labyrinth at the heart of it. And there are hours in here, if you let there be. 🌿

Guests come planning to read and end up doing nothing whatsoever. Watching a sunbird work its way through the flowers. Following a path just to see where it goes. This is the most valuable thing we have and we didn't build it β€” we just water it and get out of the way. 🀍

Spring is when it's at its best. It's also 30% off.

1 September – 10 November 2026 Β· 30% off all room types

Full access to the labyrinth, saltwater pool, infrared sauna, fire pit, soul library, garden reading nooks and both yoga spaces. Experiences can be added to any stay. ✨

Eleven days, one deadline, and by her own account the help of angels both seen and unseen. She finished it β€” and vowed never again. Too much stress. πŸ˜…

Then came the dream.

She saw herself walking a labyrinth made of flowers, every one a different colour. She woke, thought how beautiful, and let it go.

The next day a newspaper reporter phoned out of nowhere, wanting to talk about labyrinths. A week later a friend asked her to build a goddess labyrinth in her garden for an art exhibition. 🌸

How could she refuse?

What Lauren Artress calls the labyrinth bug had bitten properly by then. Terry trained as a Veriditas facilitator under Artress herself and has since built more than 350 labyrinths, temporary and permanent, in South Africa and abroad.

She stopped being someone who kept finding labyrinths and became the one who builds them. 🀍

The last one to find her is right here at Kamala, the heart of our garden.

✨ Terry offers labyrinth walks, workshops and talks, labyrinth-building retreats for places that want one of their own, and Pilgrimage to the Heart here at Kamala, where the labyrinth becomes the tool for transformation.

A spiral in the Sacred Valley of Peru, planted by Carol Cumes in her garden at Willka T'ika, which taught her something uncomfortable about where her energy goes.

A labyrinth on a farm in Lemoenshoek, just outside Barrydale, walked many times over. Once it eased a pain in her lower back. Once, walking beside her mother, her late father arrived. Once it was nothing but laughter with Josua. Same path every time. Never the same walk twice. 🀍

Then Chartres Cathedral β€” the most famous labyrinth in the world. Chairs had been stacked across the design, so she couldn't walk it. She stood in each petal of the rosette instead, and her feet began to burn. Sitting in the centre with tourists streaming past, her hands burned too. Her mind went quiet. Her heart filled. ✨

She went back in 2018, on a day it was open, and walked it with her friend Regine while the organist practised overhead. The bells began to ring as they reached the centre. πŸ””

By then something had been asking her the same question for years. She was about to answer it β€” badly, and then properly.

Terry wasn't looking for a labyrinth. She was looking for a way to keep a hungry five-year old busy.

She was a journalist then, at the Omega Institute in America to train as a yoga teacher, with her son Josua in tow. He was five, he was hungry, and the restaurant didn't open until six. So they walked the farm to pass the time β€” and came upon a labyrinth built of stone.

Josua started to walk it. Then he started to run it. Within minutes the hangry child had gone and a laughing one stood in his place.

"I immediately knew THIS is special."

She came back alone under a full moon and walked it herself. That walk handed her the clarity she'd been circling for months: leave journalism, begin again as a holistic therapist. 🀍

One walk. A whole life pointed somewhere new.

She thought that was the end of it. It was the first turn. ➑️ photo 2

Thich Nhat Hanh spent a lifetime teaching people to walk. 🌿

Not anywhere in particular. Just to walk β€” slowly, deliberately, with attention on the ground meeting the foot. He called it walking meditation, and he believed it was available to anyone, anywhere, at any moment, no cushion or silence or special conditions required.

Which is what we love about this. The miracle isn't somewhere else. It isn't waiting for you at the end of some spiritual achievement. It's underfoot, right now, in the least remarkable act you'll perform today. 🀍

Our labyrinth works on the same principle. So do the garden paths. There's nothing to reach and nothing to solve β€” only the next step, taken slowly enough to notice you're taking it. πŸŒ€

Come and walk. Barefoot, if the day allows. ✨

"I think if I stay there for a week I will positively glow in the dark."

LizΓ©l, we have never wanted to test a theory more.

This arrived from her and her partner after a weekend with us β€” a quiet getaway that they say turned into something else entirely, thanks to a private cacao ceremony that shifted their romantic weekend into a weekend of connection. 🀍

Here's the thing about reviews like this one. We could tell you about the garden, the labyrinth, the old stone walls, the birds, the little nooks to sit in. We do tell you, often. But it lands completely differently coming from someone who actually sat in it β€” and every time one of these arrives in our inbox, we read it out loud to each other.

Thank you LizΓ©l. Come back for the week. We'll keep the fire going. πŸ”₯

"You are not escaping your life. You are going to meet it." 🀍- Terry de Vries

People come to Kamala for all sorts of reasons. Stressed out and depleted. At a crossroads and unsure which way to go. Working through grief, or trauma, or a loss they haven't had space to feel properly. Recuperating from illness. Trying to finish the book. πŸ“–

And plenty of people come for no reason at all beyond wanting to slow down and remember what unhurried feels like. That counts too.

What retreating gives you isn't an escape from any of it. It's room. Enough quiet to hear your own thinking again, enough rest to stop running on empty, and enough distance to see your life clearly rather than just being inside it. 🌿

Most people leave lighter than they arrived. Some leave with a decision they'd been circling for months.

πŸŒ€ Our upcoming retreats are listed on our website β€” have a look and see which one is calling you.

Spring doesn't arrive quietly in the Klein Karoo. 🌸

It arrives all at once β€” fynbos coming into colour, the garden filling out, the birds getting loud enough to wake you before your alarm does. Warm days, cool nights, and the kind of light that makes you want to be outside in it for hours.

It's our favourite season here. So we're making it easier to come and see it.

🌿 SPRING SPECIAL β€” 30% OFF ALL ROOM TYPES
Valid 1 September to 10 November 2026

Every room, every unit, the garden cottage β€” all of it, 30% off.

Your stay includes full access to everything here:
🧘 Indoor and outdoor yoga spaces
πŸ“– Garden reading nooks and the soul library
πŸ”₯ Fire pit
♨️ Infrared sauna
🏊 Saltwater swimming pool
πŸŒ€ The labyrinth
And access to our popular tea & coffee station and kitchen.

And if you'd like to go deeper, experiences can be added to any overnight stay β€” sound healing, a cacao ceremony, a tea ceremony, a nature medicine walk, wild swimming in the mountain pools, or a yoga class. Just ask when you book. ✨

Spring is short. This is shorter.

There's a moment most evenings when the conversation runs out. πŸ”₯

Not awkwardly. It just thins, the way it does when everyone at the table has had a full day and no one feels the need to fill the quiet. Plates are almost empty. The fire has settled into its low, serious stage. And then you start to hear it β€” the garden, doing what it does at night when it thinks nobody's listening.

Frogs somewhere near the water. Something small moving through the beds. An owl, if you're lucky. πŸŒ™

This is the part of the day that guests tell us about afterwards. Not the sauna or the swim or the labyrinth, though those all get their turn. This. Sitting in front of the fire with the day settling in your body, letting it all catch up with you.

Come and let your evenings be this slow. 🍽️
