Severe sound sensitivity after wax removal can happen in some patients, especially after long-standing earwax impaction. Once the blockage is removed, normal environmental sounds may suddenly feel extremely loud or overwhelming because the ear has readjusted to hearing again. Some patients describe it as hearing “everything,” even tiny sounds.

This can sometimes resemble hyperacusis, where ordinary sounds become uncomfortably loud. Symptoms may include:

Difficulty sleeping due to sound sensitivity

Wind or background noise sounding amplified

Irritation or discomfort with everyday sounds

Anxiety around noisy environments

The irritation can also be temporary after irrigation if the ear canal or eardrum becomes sensitive during the procedure.

✅ Ear irrigation remains one of the safer and commonly used methods for managing impacted wax when performed correctly by trained professionals.
⚠️ Patients should still be monitored for complications such as dizziness, pain, infection, tinnitus, or persistent sound sensitivity after the procedure.

If symptoms continue or worsen, a full audiological and ENT assessment is important to rule out middle or inner ear involvement.

⚠️ From an audiologist’s perspective — this is dangerous 👂🏽

Using sharp objects to remove earwax impaction is extremely risky and can lead to serious complications, including a perforated eardrum, infections, and ongoing discharge.

🚫 Never use sharp objects to clean your ears.
Safe removal should always be done by a qualified professional.

👂 Did you know?
Wax impaction is one of the most common ear problems we see. When earwax builds up too much, it can block the ear canal and cause:
✅ Ear pain or discomfort
✅ Itching inside the ear
✅ Hearing loss or muffled sounds
✅ Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
✅ Dizziness in some cases

🔎 With a simple otoscope check, we can identify if you have wax impaction.

💡 Treatment:

We may soften the wax with ear drops

Professional wax removal in our clinic (safe & effective)

Avoid using earbuds or sharp objects – they push the wax deeper and make things worse
