When a loved one passes away, most families find themselves in unfamiliar territory, unsure of what to do first, who to call, or what decisions need to be made straight away.
Here's a simple guide to the first steps:
If your loved one passes away at home:
➡️ Call emergency services so a paramedic can assess the situation and issue a Declaration of Death
➡️ The paramedic will advise whether to contact SAPS (for unnatural or suspicious deaths) or a
funeral director of your choice (for natural deaths)
➡️ If your loved one was under the care of a doctor at home, you may notify them, although
PENINSULA FUNERALS will usually do this on your behalf
If your loved one passes away in a hospital or care facility:
➡️ The nursing staff will guide you through the next steps
➡️ You will be asked to nominate a funeral director to transfer your loved one into their care.
PENINSULA FUNERALS will be honoured to assist.
➡️ We will liaise with the attending medical practitioner to complete the necessary documentation
If the death is unnatural or suspicious:
➡️ Report the matter to SAPS immediately
➡️ Do not disturb or tamper with the scene
➡️ Forensic Pathology Services will transfer your loved one to the state mortuary while your
we can assist you with making the necessary funeral arrangements
You don't have to navigate this journey alone. Our team at PENINSULA FUNERALS are available to offer guidance, answer your questions, and support you every step of the way.
