This might not be what you want to hear, but there is no supplement that will replace the things your body most needs and craves. 😖

No matter how pricey it is or how many adaptogens it promises to have… there is no supplement that can take the place of adequate rest. There is no supplement that will undo not eating enough, and no supplement that can take the place of fuelling your body with a balance of whole foods or supporting your blood sugars. 🩸🥦

No supplement can unpick and undo the years of negative self-talk or the self-loathing you feel towards your beautiful body. 💔 No supplement can nourish and regulate your nervous system unless you’re helping your body feel safe at the same time.

In short: supplements can support, but they are not (and can never be) magic wands.

If your body is overwhelmed, it doesn’t matter what trendy supplements or pills are on the market. It doesn’t matter what pricey greens powders you buy or add to your diet. 🥬

If you’re struggling with your hormones, skipping meals, surviving on coffee, eating endless UPFs (ultra-processed foods), struggling to rest, or lacking in self-compassion… chances are, supplements are not what your body most needs. ❤️

Don’t get me wrong: supplements have a time and a place. But supplements can never replace self-love and self-care, nor can they ever replace the foundations. ❤️

Why your annual gynaecological check-up matters

Many women only book an appointment when something feels wrong. In reality, routine gynaecological care is one of the most important ways to protect your long-term health.

An annual visit provides an opportunity to:

-Discuss changes in your menstrual cycle
-Review your contraception
-Assess fertility concerns
-Address menopausal symptoms
-Investigate pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding
-Discuss breast and cervical health

These appointments are about more than examinations. They are an opportunity to ask questions, discuss concerns, and gain a better understanding of your body.

Looking after your health today may prevent more complex problems in the future.

Today, we celebrate the remarkable women who strengthen our families, workplaces, and communities every day.

National Women's Day is more than a celebration. It is a reminder of the courage of the women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in the fight for equality, dignity, and justice.

Nearly seventy years later, their legacy continues to inspire us.

As a gynaecologist, I have the privilege of caring for women through every stage of life. I see their resilience, strength, and compassion every day. I also see the importance of ensuring that every woman has access to respectful, evidence-based healthcare, where her voice is heard and her concerns are taken seriously.

Today, I celebrate every woman who continues to show up for herself, her family, and her community.

May we continue to support one another, advocate for women's health, and empower future generations to thrive.

Happy National Women's Day.

Five signs you should book an appointment with your gynaecologist

Many women are unsure when symptoms need medical attention. While some changes are normal, others should not be ignored.

Consider making an appointment if you experience:
• unusually heavy or prolonged periods
• bleeding between periods or after in*******se
• persistent pelvic pain
• pain during in*******se
• unusual vaginal discharge, itching or odour

Your body has its own way of telling you when something is not quite right. Listening early often leads to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment.

Don't ignore persistent bloating.

Occasional bloating is common and often related to diet or your menstrual cycle. However, persistent bloating that continues for several weeks should not be dismissed.

If bloating is accompanied by:

-pelvic pain
-feeling full quickly
-changes in bowel habits
-increased urinary frequency
-unexplained weight changes

It is worth seeking medical advice.

Most causes are not serious, but persistent symptoms deserve proper assessment to identify the underlying cause.

Your body knows when something has changed. Trust it.

World Hepatitis Day reminds us of the importance of awareness, testing and prevention.

During pregnancy, screening for hepatitis forms part of routine antenatal care because early identification helps protect both mother and baby.

Knowing your status allows timely treatment and better outcomes.

The importance of pelvic floor health

Your pelvic floor muscles support your bladder, uterus and bowel.

Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and ageing can all weaken these muscles.

Pelvic floor exercises may help:

-reduce urinary leakage
-improve recovery after childbirth
-support pelvic organs
-improve quality of life

Looking after your pelvic floor is an investment in your long-term health.

Vaginal infections: when should you seek help?

Changes in vaginal discharge can be completely normal throughout the menstrual cycle.

However, if you notice:

- a strong odour
- itching or burning
- green or yellow discharge
- pain during urination
- bleeding after in*******se

It is important to seek medical advice. Early diagnosis often means simpler treatment and quicker recovery.

This Nelson Mandela Day, we are reminded that every act of kindness has the power to change someone's life.

In healthcare, kindness is more than compassion. It means listening carefully, treating every patient with dignity, and ensuring every woman feels respected and supported throughout her healthcare journey.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply making someone feel heard.
