Listen to Catherine, Princess of Wales, speak about the challenges of cancer survivorship

In the midst of preparing for the **Cancer Alliance Cancer Survivorship Solution Lab**, I came across this moving clip of Catherine, Princess of Wales, reflecting on her experience after cancer treatment.

What struck me was how clearly she spoke about a reality that so many cancer survivors understand:

**Finishing treatment does not mean that the cancer journey is over.**

There is often an expectation that once treatment ends, you simply return to “normal”. But survivorship can bring a whole new set of challenges — physical recovery, fatigue, emotional adjustment, fear about the future, changes in relationships and work, and the difficult process of rebuilding confidence in your body and your life.

This period is often **not spoken about enough, not prepared for enough, and not supported enough.**

This is exactly why the **Cancer Alliance South Africa Cancer Survivorship Solution Lab** matters.

We hope this work will contribute towards the development of a **South African Cancer Survivorship Framework** — recognising that good cancer care must continue beyond treatment and include rehabilitation, psychosocial support, follow-up care and the very real needs of people learning to live after cancer.

But the framework must be shaped by the people who know this journey best: **cancer survivors themselves.**

This anonymous questionnaire will help the Cancer Alliance South Africa understand the experiences, challenges and unmet needs of people affected by cancer—from diagnosis and treatment to recovery, long-term follow-up and life after treatment.

Your responses will support our work to advocate for improved, more holistic and patient-centred cancer services. The findings will also help guide recommendations to government for the development of a **National Cancer Survivorship Framework**, linked to the planned National Cancer Advisory Council.

CALLING ALL CANCER SURVIVORS, FAMILIES AND CAREGIVERS

The Cancer Alliance South Africa invites people living with and beyond cancer, as well as family members and caregivers, to participate in our Cancer Survivor Experience Survey

Your lived experience matters. By sharing your experiences, challenges and unmet needs, you can help us develop and advocate for improved cancer services for patients, survivors and their families across South Africa.

The survey forms part of the National Cancer Survivorship Framework Solution Lab Project. The findings will help guide the development of an evidence-informed National Cancer Survivorship Framework that:
• improves quality of life and continuity of care;
• promotes equitable access to support and services;
• strengthens South Africa’s health system; and
• ensures that the voices of people affected by cancer influence policy, service delivery, research, monitoring and evaluation.

Cancer survivorship begins at diagnosis and continues throughout treatment, recovery and long-term follow-up, including palliative and end-of-life care where applicable.

Participation is voluntary. Email addresses will not be collected, and your responses will be treated as confidential in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Any optional contact details you provide will be securely stored, used only if the project team needs to contact you, and will not be shared. Reports will not identify individual participants without their separate consent.

For adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors, finishing treatment does not necessarily mean returning to life as it was before.

Survivorship can bring complex and ongoing challenges, including fear of recurrence, fertility and family planning concerns, career and financial stress, changing relationships, and grief for the life, identity, or milestones that may have been lost or changed.

In the latest issue of AOSW Connections, Megan Cannone, LCSW-C, OSW-C, OPN-CG, shares a clinical perspective on supporting AYAs through the often nonlinear experience of survivorship. She explores the many forms of grief that can emerge after cancer and discusses the importance of challenging the pressure to “bounce back,” making space for difficult emotions, reclaiming personal narratives, and supporting each individual as they redefine their identity and future.

Registration is closing soon for the **third Oncology Social Work Orientation Training Programme for 2026**, presented by **Linda Greeff**.

The programme starts on Wednesday, 5 August 2026 and runs for seven weeks,with live and interactive sessions presented via Zoom every Wednesday evening from 17:30 to 19:30pm

The programme is accredited for 63 CPD points by the South African Council for Social Service Professions.

This specialised training programme is designed for social workers who want to strengthen their knowledge, confidence and practical skills in oncology and palliative care. The course offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of:

• The cancer journey and cancer treatment
• Psychosocial assessment and distress screening
• Communication with patients and families
• Survivorship and adjustment after treatment
• Grief, loss and bereavement
• Palliative and end-of-life care
• The social worker’s role within the multidisciplinary oncology team

**Course fee: R3 801**

The fee may be paid in three instalments:

• Before or at the first session
• At Session 3
• At Session 6
