The Ward-Based Primary Health Care Outreach Team (WBPHCOT) remain one of the key pillars of the public health system, especially in the Eastern Cape.

South Africa is among the countries that are rolling out the Lenacapavir Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), which will help to strengthen the prevention of HIV infection. This is in line with the strategy of eliminating new HIV infections by 2030.

In preparation for the launch of the Lenacapavir and HPV Campaign, the Eastern Cape Department of Health is currently conducting a two-day training session for Outreach Team Leaders (OTLs), Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Lay Counsellors in Gqeberha, in the Nelson Mandela Bay Health District.

The training is intended to equip the healthcare workers on PrEP, PEP and HIV Self Screening (HIVSS).

38 PATIENTS BENEFIT FROM CATARACT BLITZ IN MATATIELE.

At least 38 patients have received sight-restoring cataract surgery today at Taylor Bequest Hospital in Matatiele, as the Eastern Cape Department of Health intensifies efforts to reduce surgical backlogs and bring specialist eye-care services closer to rural communities.

The beneficiaries are from across the four local municipalities of Alfred Nzo District, including patients from Mount Fletcher in the Joe Gqabi District.

The Cataract Blitz is a partnership between the Eastern Cape Department of Health, National Department of Health (South Africa) and the South African National Council for the Blind, bringing together eye surgeons, theatre and ophthalmic nurses, optometrists and technical teams.

Supported by the Alfred Nzo EMS, which transported patients to the hospital, the initiative is helping restore not only sight, but also independence and quality of life, particularly for elderly patients.

The programme continues until 16 August 2026.
