After a career of 20 years I often think what has changed in the patients we see. Some of the things are that we fit people of a younger age with hearing aids (Jay for breaking down a stigma and for cognitive health), we also see babies for intervention (a big win for early detection) but something that we see is the role and involvement of father's in the intervention process.

I think about the dad who's car was stolen and walked from Heidedal with his son on his shoulders to therapy sessions every Monday for months. The father who was grieving and angry about the diagnosis of his child's hearing loss but 3 years down the line never miss a therapy session and joins in for every activity. The dad who takes care of his son, cooks and give a full report on the goals they have been working on while his wife is stationed outside of Bloem for her work. The Father who's third language is English but walked to the library with his daughter after working night shift to take out books and read to her in English to improve her language. The single father who makes time to bring his child to therapy. The father that makes a plan with rising fuel prices to let his wife and child attend therapy in another town because he wants to see his child excell by the time he needs to go to school. The dad who was a car guard and paid for the session in R5 and and R2 coins and never asked for discount. The new dad that is so proud to hear that his newborn passed her hearing screening test.

We have wonderful dads in South Africa. They are involved, supportive and invested in their children's development and well being. To these fathers, we admire and apreciate you and cherish the countless sacrifices you make. How lucky and blessed are those little ones.

This picture is one of my favourite moments in therapy where a dad brought the toddler to the session. He had very limited language at that stage and was upset before they left for the session. Somehow the dad figured out that he wanted a cape but could not find one. He took a garbage bag and a washing peg and the superhero was satisfied. That is the magic of fathers!
