A child who interrupts, argues over whose turn it is, or insists “but everyone knows that!” may not be trying to be difficult.

They may still be learning a big social skill: understanding that other people can think, feel, know and want different things.

It can be hard to imagine that Mum didn’t see what you saw. Or that a friend is upset even when they say “I’m fine”. Or that someone believes the biscuits are still in the cupboard because they didn’t see them being moved.

This is often called theory of mind or perspective taking. It develops over time, and children need lots of calm, real-life practice.

A helpful pause can sound like:
“Hmm, what do you think they know?”
“Can they see what you can see?”
“How might that have felt for them?”
“What could they be thinking right now?”

Tiredness, anxiety, impulsivity, autism, ADHD and language differences can all make social understanding harder in the moment too. Patience matters. So does remembering that behaviour is often communication.

Hierdie aktiwiteit was nou VET prrrrret!!! Soms is mens so deur geoefen aan al die werkvelle en speletjies- time to tune into our creative side!!!!

Did you know the same muscles needed for chewing are the same muscles needed for talking?????

Too often parents are scared of introducing solids and will puree foods way past what children can tolerate safely.

* Research shows serving whole foods improves confidence and limits chocking episodes
* Baby-led weaning involves having your baby self-feed whole softly steamed foods- usually around 6-7months
*Introducing solids should not be before 17weeks and not delayed beyond 26 weeks
* Look for “ready” cues when introducing solids- remember all babies differ

P.S Do not let your own feelings of anxiety be their limitation. Babies are capable of way more than what we think!

Language stimulation starts at home (no fancy apps needed)!!

During the holiday we decided to bake some cookies.

Perks:
*quality time
* fun activity
* tasty snacks
* awesome gifts
* improving sequencing skills
* Building stamina for task completion
* Sensory play

Language concepts:
* Verbs- squish, roll, press, cut, bake, mix, stir, measure, whisk, sprinkle
* Hot/ cold
*liquids/ solids/ dry ingredients vs wet ingredients
* tastes- sweet, salty, buttery
* shapes

But the most important part was- we had FUN!
