What makes a joint replacement safe?

Patient safety starts with careful planning at every stage of the treatment journey.

Several factors play an important role, including:

• An experienced orthopaedic surgeon
• Careful patient assessment and selection
• Detailed surgical planning
• A sterile operating theatre and appropriate infection-control measures
• The right implant for the individual patient
• Appropriate post-operative care and follow-up

At CTS Joints, every part of the process matters, from the initial assessment and surgical planning to the procedure itself and the care that follows.

For World Patient Safety Day, we recognise the importance of a thorough, considered approach to joint replacement and keeping patient safety at the centre of care.

What does robotic technology actually do during a knee replacement?

Before the operation begins, the technology can help create a detailed picture of the patient's knee and assist the surgeon with planning the procedure.

The system can help the surgeon assess the anatomy, plan implant positioning and make adjustments based on the individual patient's knee.

But the technology does not replace the surgeon.

It is a tool that supports the surgeon's planning and decision-making, while the surgeon remains responsible for the procedure and the final decisions.

At CTS Joints, modern technology is used alongside specialist expertise to help plan treatment around the individual patient.

An ACL tear does not automatically mean that every patient needs surgery.

The right treatment depends on the person and what they need their knee to do.

Someone who mainly walks and does everyday activities may have different treatment needs from someone who plays football, rugby or another sport that involves sudden changes in direction.

Other factors also matter, including knee instability and whether there are additional injuries inside the knee.

So the question is not simply:

“Is the ACL torn?”

It is:

“What does this injury mean for this particular patient?”

That is where a proper assessment matters.

How long should a hip replacement last?

It is a question many patients understandably have before surgery.

A 2026 study published in The Lancet looked at more than 1.9 million total hip replacements using clinical studies and national joint registry data. The researchers estimated that around 92% of modern hip replacements could still be functioning at 30 years. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41763743/.

That does not mean every hip replacement will last 30 years. Age, activity, implant type and other individual factors can all influence the outcome. But the research gives us a much clearer picture of how long modern hip replacements can potentially last. Long-term expectations are an important part of the conversation before surgery.

A revision hip replacement is not simply another hip replacement.

When a previous hip replacement needs to be revised, the surgeon is working with an existing implant and may also need to deal with issues such as loosening, infection, instability, wear or changes to the surrounding bone.

This can make the procedure more complex than the original operation.

It also means that careful assessment and planning are particularly important.

Revision surgery is about understanding what has happened with the original replacement and deciding how best to address the problem.

A fracture is more than a broken bone.

After an injury, the first priority is to keep the person safe and prevent further harm while they receive appropriate medical attention.

What happens next depends on the type of injury. A fracture may involve the bone itself, the surrounding tissues or even the nearby joint.

Getting the right assessment early can help determine the most appropriate treatment and support the best possible recovery.

On World First Aid Day, we are reminded that knowing what to do after an injury can make a difference.

Two people can have very similar changes on an X-ray, but that does not mean they need the same treatment.

An X-ray is only one part of the picture. A surgeon also considers your symptoms, movement, activity level, general health and what you need your joint to do.

For one person, treatment may focus on managing symptoms and maintaining movement. For another, surgery may eventually be considered.

The important thing is to look at the whole patient, not just the scan.

At CTS Joints, treatment is considered around the individual, taking into account their symptoms, needs and overall circumstances.

Planning a knee replacement is a detailed process, and robotic technology can help make that planning more precise.

At CTS Joints, Dr CT Solomon uses robotic-assisted technology to help plan knee replacement surgery according to each patient’s individual anatomy.

The technology can create a detailed 3D model of the knee, allowing the surgeon to assess implant size, positioning and alignment before the procedure. During surgery, the system can also provide real-time information to help guide the planned procedure.

The technology supports the surgeon, Dr Solomon remains in control of the procedure and uses his specialist expertise to make the clinical decisions.

Careful planning. Advanced technology. Specialist expertise.

Recovery is not something that only starts after surgery.

For some patients preparing for a joint replacement, the time before the operation can also be an important part of the treatment journey.

Understanding what the operation involves, working on strength and movement where appropriate, and knowing what rehabilitation may involve can help a patient prepare for what comes next.

The operation is one part of the journey.

What happens before and after it matters too.

On World Physiotherapy Day, we recognise the important role rehabilitation can play in helping patients work towards improved movement and function.

Behind every treatment decision is years of specialist training, experience and continued development.

Dr CT Solomon completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Stellenbosch in 2010 before spending 12 months in Wales, where he super-specialised in primary and revision hip replacements.

After returning to South Africa, he became a senior specialist at Paarl Provincial Hospital, where he established a joint replacement unit and performed more than 200 joint replacements per year for five years.

In 2016, Dr Solomon became the first certified robotic joint replacement surgeon in South Africa.

Today, his practice includes hip and knee replacements, as well as trauma surgery and sports medicine.

At CTS Joints, this experience supports an approach focused on understanding the individual patient and finding the most appropriate treatment for their needs.
