A Remarkable Recovery at Brits District Hospital
Mr. Sello Kekana, a 43-year-old man, was admitted to Brits District Hospital on 29 March after allegedly being doused with petrol and set alight by his partner. He sustained severe injuries, including more than 45% third-degree burns affecting multiple parts of his body.
Upon arrival at the Emergency Department, Mr. Kekana was unable to breathe independently, was experiencing excruciating pain, and presented with an unstable mental state. He was immediately classified as a Priority 1 patient and managed in the Resuscitation Area, where he received life-saving interventions, including assisted ventilation and intensive pain management.
Further assessment revealed pre-existing medical conditions that significantly compromised his lung function, adding complexity to his treatment and recovery. Due to the unavailability of beds at higher-level institutions, Mr. Kekana was admitted to Brits District Hospital, where a dedicated multidisciplinary team took responsibility for his care.
His treatment involved a collaborative approach from nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, Internal Medicine specialists, General Surgery Medical Officers, and Plastic Surgeons who provided ongoing consultation and guidance.
Over the course of his admission, Mr. Kekana showed remarkable progress. He was successfully weaned off assisted ventilation, his underlying medical conditions were stabilised, and his burn wounds healed exceptionally well. Notably, the burns to his face achieved complete healing.
Now, seven weeks since the incident, including four weeks of hospitalisation, Mr. Kekana continues to recover without complications. His recovery has been remarkable, particularly considering the severity of his injuries and his pre-existing health conditions.
Brits District Hospital commends the commitment and teamwork of all healthcare professionals involved in his care and wishes Mr. Kekana continued strength and healing on his journey to full recovery.
