A systemic review and meta-analysis by Coulter et al. (2018) examined the efficacy and safety of manipulation and mobilisation therapies for treatment of chronic lower back pain. The study reported moderate quality evidence for manipulation and mobilisation in reducing pain and improving function in chronic pain patients. Interestingly, manipulation appears to produce a larger effect. Both therapies were considered safe.

This interesting article discusses the effects of lumbo-pelvic control in female professional athletes involving sports with frequent jump-landings. Poor lumbo-pelvic control may result in biomechanically improper landing, thereby increasing the risk of lower limb injury, especially with regards to knee injuries. This highlights the need to assess lumbo-pelvic control in patients when evaluating risk factors.

A research review by Webb, Mahoney and Heneghan (2017), found evidence of thoracic extension and side flexion during full flexion and abduction of the shoulder. This highlights the importance of including assessment and management of thoracic spine mobility in the management of shoulder complaints. In other words, make sure you don't forget your upper back when working on shoulder issues!

20-30 MIN, 3-5 TIMES A WEEK OF STABILISATION EXERCISE BEST FOR CHRONIC NSLBP, SAYS NEW STUDY. As experts in spine pain and disability, chiropractors incorporate exercise prescription into their care plans. Stabilisation exercises are important in the rehabilitation of patients with chronic, non-specific low back pain. This systematic review [1] aimed to identify the optimum dose-response effect of stabilisation exercises on pain and disability.

The systematic review involved 1239 subjects receiving stabilisation exercises.

In patients with non-specific chronic LBP, stabilization exercise with a training frequency of 3 to 5 times per week (low quality evidence) and a training time of 20 to 30 min per session (moderate quality evidence) elicited the largest effect on pain and disability.
