For the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of being entrusted with facilitating a human-rights-centred Master’s intensive that runs over four consecutive days.
Today is Day 2 💻 and intensive really is the word. 😮💨
This year, I have my largest cohort yet, 33 Master’s students, all mental health professionals across different fields.
Yesterday, every one of them presented their individual casework. A FULL Day 1.
I structure these four days more as a seminar than traditional lectures. At this level, I’m engaging with professionals and critical thinkers. My role is to create space for rigorous critical thinking, dialogue, questioning and application. A huge part of that is bringing people into the room who are doing this work in the real world.
And so, I’m incredibly excited about the programme I’ve curated this year:
⚖️ Magistrate Janine Boltman — Regional Court
⚖️ Harsha Gihwala & Nasreen Solomon — High Court attorneys & researchers, UCT Gender, Health & Justice Research Unit — who joined us yesterday and will be back again today
🌱 Danielle Moosajie — Director of Arise Family SA, an NPO working to strengthen and support families in vulnerable and resource-poor communities
🏳️🌈 Liberty Matthyse — Director of Gender Dynamix & a giant in LGBTQI+ advocacy space
⚖️ Yolanda Pretorius — Senior Prosecutor in Sexual Offences Regional Court
All this alongside the students’ own critical engagement, individual presentations and a major group project culminating in presentations on Day 4.
I’m incredibly grateful to every person who has agreed to bring their expertise into this space, and really proud of what these four days hold. ❤️
33 presentations down. Day 2 almost down. Two more to go. 😮💨
May God be with me and with the WiFi, Teams and every other virtual technicality between now and Thursday. 😂🙏🏽💻
