Why is osteoporosis called the 'silent disease'?
Because it often develops without any warning signs.
You can't feel your bones becoming weaker, and many people only discover they have osteoporosis after a fracture from what seemed like a minor fall or injury.
Women, particularly after menopause, are at a higher risk due to the natural decline in oestrogen, which plays an important role in maintaining bone strength.
You can help protect your bones by:
• Staying physically active, especially with weight-bearing and resistance exercises
• Getting enough calcium and vitamin D
• Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol
• Speaking to your doctor about a bone density scan if you have risk factors or are over the age of 65
Healthy bones are the foundation of an active, independent life. This Women's Month, take a moment to think about your bone health, because prevention is always better than treatment.
