It’s about seeing the smile of someone we love, watching a magnificent sunset, appreciating the colours of nature and recognising the beauty in everyday moments.

It’s about our freedom, independence, confidence and safety.

Our eyes connect us to the world, but they are also an important part of our overall health.

Some vision loss can be treated or reversed, while other damage may be permanent.

That’s why prevention, regular eye examinations and early detection are so important.

After more than 30 years as an optometrist, I believe that protecting your vision means protecting your quality of life.

Because life isn’t just meant to be seen…

🚗👓 OCTOBER IS NATIONAL TRANSPORT MONTH 🇿🇦

Good eyesight is an essential part of safer driving. Being able to see clearly, judge distances and respond quickly to changing road conditions helps protect you, your passengers and everyone sharing the road.

At Spectacle World, we offer driver’s licence vision screening and can issue the appropriate SAOA-sanctioned vision screening certificate following a successful screening.

And remember: passing a licence screening is only a minimum requirement. Regular comprehensive eye examinations remain important, particularly as we get older and our vision changes.

🌈 COLOUR BLIND AWARENESS DAY | 6 SEPTEMBER 👁️

How do you know that the red you see is the same red someone else sees? ❤️

Colour blindness is often something you are born with, so you may not even know that you see colours differently.

Inside the retina are special light-sensitive cells called cones. We have three main types, most sensitive to different ranges of light that we commonly describe as red, green and blue. 🌈 These cones send signals through the visual system to the brain, where the information is compared and interpreted as colour.

In the most common inherited colour vision deficiency, the red- or green-sensitive cone pigment is altered or missing. This makes certain colours much harder to tell apart — particularly reds and greens.

👁️ So how can we test it?

Your optometrist can perform the Ishihara Colour Vision Test — the familiar pages of coloured dots with numbers or patterns hidden inside them. Someone with typical colour vision may see one number, while someone with a red-green colour vision deficiency may see a different number or no number at all.

📖 The test helps us understand how your eyes and brain are processing colour.

John Dalton, born on 6 September 1766, was one of the first scientists to describe his own colour blindness — which is why it is sometimes called Daltonism.

🌈 You may never know you see colour differently until you test it.
