GLP-1 meds- who should NOT be taking them?

Parenting advice is everywhere. 🥴
Your mother-in-law has thoughts. Instagram has thoughts. The parenting Facebook group definitely has thoughts. 😅

It's been a huge honour to be in a sweltering Lille, France, as part of an international expert panel talking about the gut microbiome in the infant... and to be surrounded by deep culture, superb colleagues, and even French commentary for the football!

Take home messages for me:
- the first year of life is VITAL to establish a healthy gut microbiome, which can set the scene for the rest of one's life in terms of immunity, allergies, metabolic health and even cognitive effects. Natural deliveries, breastfeeding and reduction in antibiotic use- if possible- are key!

- the gut and brain are super interlinked... gut issues can be markedly worsened by neuro-emotional dysfunction and stress. Sensitive people... sensitive guts. Stress... changes in bowel habits. We need to compassionately manage the whole person.

Reality check:
Would you take an injectable medication that has not been rigourously tested, is made in unregulated facilities, has not been long around to know the long-term side effects?
Well, you may already be!

carefully for the two major groupings of peptides:
On the one hand, we have those peptides that have been rigorously tested, around for decades, approved by regulatory agencies, and of exceptional use if given under the right circumstances by the right clinician, such as insulin, growth hormone and GLP1 agonists.

On the other hand, we have those peptides which are trending and widely punted for youthfulness, muscle definition and longevity... many of which are poorly tested, sometimes only in 50 to 100 people worldwide, not approved by regulatory agents, with unknown side-effects long-term, and unknown manufacturing processes. And these are the ones being used by our teens??

Happy Mothers' Day! But really? Do we make an attempt to acknowledge mothers once a year? All year round mothers carry not only most of the physical burden in the Household, but also most of the mental and emotional burden. We seem to run 100 separate excel spreadsheet in our brains at one moment!

If mothers feel unloved and unacknowledged, they are at risk of developing burnout and depression, and also at risk of physical diseases such as heart disease, autoimmune and inflammatory disease, and even cognitive deterioration because of the pro-inflammatory effect of chronic stress.

Let's make an effort to make all the mothers out there feel special, loved and seen. When your wife/mother says she feels unnoticed or she feels tired or down, don't dismiss it as being overly emotional or oversensitive. She is truly feeling the constant burden and may just need a bit of acknowledgement or a good cup of tea. 🩷

Aerobic versus strength training? BOTH are so important and do different reasons!
Aerobic= heart health, reduced cardiovascular mortality
Strength= metabolic magic, good function, bone strength, balance, independence...

We have a tradition of "family sports challenges." Papa Bear Paul is sequentially taking the kids on a tandem for the Cape Town cycle race, and Mama Bear is sequentially doing the Hyrox with her cubs. Today was Ella's turn for the women's doubles with her old Mama. It was amazing! Tiring yes, but sooooo worth it.

A shared challenge is (mostly!) so healthy for mind, body & bonding!

will your next shared challenge be?

We had a fantastic 2 day break on a farm- NO iPads allowed. The kids seemed to merge with nature: running, cycling, swimming in the dam, playing with animals... they seemed happy. Less distracted.

Excessive screen time not only directly affects the brain's firing and wiring, but also takes away those opportunities to really experience the real world.

Our podcast coming out on Tuesday the 7th April discusses the opportunity costs of screen time in kids. A reality for all of us.
