While raising a little one is an incredible journey, it often comes with a whole lot of questions!
As a Paediatrician, I always remind parents at my practice that you don't have to have it all figured out everyday. You just have to remember that you are not alone and that you can ask for help.

Here are three pieces of my most appreciated and important reminders for the incredible parents I have had the privilege of helping:
1️⃣ Every child’s timeline is unique: Milestones like walking or talking have time windows. Comparison is the thief of joy! While it can be tempting, do not gravitate towards constantly comparing your child to other children—rather ask the experts.
2️⃣ A health condition doesn't always mean fussiness: It's easy to assume a quiet or calm child is completely fine, but little ones can sometimes mask symptoms or deal with underlying issues without throwing a tantrum or crying. Conversely, a high-energy child isn't automatically healthy. Always look at the whole picture—hydration, breathing, growth, alertness and overall development matter more than just mood.
3️⃣ Trust your gut: If something feels off to you as a parent, it is always worth checking out. Peace of mind is priceless.

Do you have questions regarding your child's overall health? Remember to talk to your child's Paediatrician about it! 🩺

Today, as we celebrate Women’s Day in South Africa, we are reminded that the strength, resilience and grace our daughters see in us today become the blueprint for the women they will become tomorrow.

Whether we’re balancing careers, showing up for our communities, or simply standing firm in our values, every action counts. Let's show them what courage looks like, what kindness sounds like and how unbreakable South African women are. 🇿🇦✨

Hi Mommies

In light of World Breastfeeding Week, it's a wonderful time to demystify some of the clinical terms that are often used in clinic rooms and textbooks.
When you are already navigating the exhaustion of feeding your baby, hearing a big medical term can feel overwhelming. Let’s explain a few common medical terms:
Lactogenesis
• The medical term: The physiological process of milk production. This process encompasses the wonderful shift from colostrum (the first milk) to mature milk.
Let-Down Reflex
• The medical term: The coordinated interplay of the hormones prolactin (for milk synthesis), oxytocin (for the milk ejection reflex), and the resulting neuroendocrine let-down response when your baby breastfeeds.
Mastitis
• The medical term: Inflammation of breast tissue, often accompanied by a blocked milk duct which may need treatment with antibiotics.
Ankyloglossia
• The medical term: Tongue-tie—which refers to a tight bit of tissue under the tongue that can make latching tricky.

Feeding a baby is a journey full of new vocabulary, and understanding the terms can help make the road feel just a little bit smoother. 🤍

It's World Breastfeeding Week 🤱
This year’s theme, "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works," highlights how crucial the solid foundation of breastfeeding is for our children.

Nutrition, immunity and lifelong health start with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding success relies on practical, targeted support from healthcare providers and loved ones who stand by mothers every step of the way.
Let’s champion what works: protecting maternity rights, providing skilled guidance and creating inclusive spaces for families everywhere.

Today, on World Hepatitis Day, I want to highlight a vital message on protecting our children’s liver health. 🌟
The liver is a remarkable, resilient organ responsible for hundreds of critical functions, but it needs our protection from the very start. Fortunately, when it comes to Paediatric hepatitis, prevention is our greatest superpower. 🦸‍♀️✨

Here is what every parent should know about keeping their little ones safe:
• Immunisation is Key: Safe and highly effective vaccines exist for Hepatitis A and B. Ensuring your child is up to date with their routine schedule is the single best shield against these viruses.
• Hygiene Matters: Simple habits like thorough handwashing after bathroom visits and before meals are excellent defenses against Hepatitis A.
• Awareness for the Whole Family: Hepatitis can affect anyone, but timely screening and maternal health checks play a massive role in preventing mother-to-child transmission.
If you have any questions about your child's vaccination schedule or liver health, never hesitate to reach out to your child’s Paediatrician! 📝

This is one of my favourite quotes from Roald Dahl, the beloved master of childhood stories, and it always stays with me.
Choosing Paediatrics wasn't just a career path for me—it’s a calling I've poured my heart into.
Whether it’s earning a high-five from a toddler, sharing a giggle over colourful stickers, or simply bringing peace of mind to a worried family, every day brings something unique.

Thank you to the parents who put their trust and greatest loves, their children, into my hands every day.

From my practice to every milestone, supporting the health, happiness and bright futures of our littlest ones is at the heart of everything I do. - Dr Candice Shah 🩺✨🤍

Let’s talk about "toddler foods" before you head out for your weekly grocery shopping. 🛒👶🏽

Global and regional dietary guidelines continue to flash a major warning light when it comes to early childhood nutrition. The focus has shifted heavily toward drastically reducing Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs)—especially sugar-sweetened beverages—in the early years.
Why the massive emphasis? Because the research is clear: early exposure to highly processed sugars and additives is now explicitly linked to long-term health risks, including adult hypertension and metabolic strain, later in life.

Many items marketed specifically for little ones are packed with hidden sugars and processed ingredients that bypass natural fullness cues.
Here is how we can outsmart the marketing traps and protect our children’s developing health with simple, real-food:
Becareful of,
❌ Store-bought fruit juices, flavoured milks, or "toddler blends" packed with hidden sugars.
❌ Heavily processed, brightly coloured toddler puffs and packaged biscuits.
❌ Highly sweetened toddler cereals

Prioritizing whole, real foods now is one of the most powerful ways to safeguard your child’s long-term cardiovascular and gut health. Choose wisely! 🍎🛒

On Nelson Mandela International Day, we don’t just look back at history; we look forward to the future we are building for—and with—our children.
Madiba always reminded us that a society’s soul is reflected in how it treats its children. And to build a better society, we must also think about what we are teaching our children.

Kindness isn't just a passive trait—it is an active catalyst. When we model and teach these values early on, we aren't just raising "polite" kids; we are equipping the next generation with the emotional intelligence to lead, heal and bring about real change.
Thank you to the man who taught the world the true power of kindness. Let's keep Madiba's legacy alive by nurturing a kinder, more accommodating world for our little ones to grow up in. 🇿🇦❤️

The role of an academic is evolving—it’s about so much more than research—it’s about continuous growth across every facet of life.
This is why I am incredibly proud to be a part of IPALA (International Pediatric Academic Leaders Association)! 🌟 IPALA recently shared an incredible breakdown of what it truly means to be a modern academic, highlighting the core pillars that define us.
Combined, these elements form the ultimate goal: becoming a true life-long learner.

What I loved most about this perspective is that being a well-rounded academic means balancing technical brilliance with deep human empathy.
It’s this holistic, supportive approach to leadership and professional growth that makes me so grateful to be a part of this amazing organization! 🌟 Here’s to shaping the future of child health and keeping the learning journey alive! 🚀
