A cannula is gently inserted into a vein in your arm.

The iron is given slowly through the IV while you relax comfortably.

Iron tablets can be an effective treatment for iron deficiency — but they don't agree with everyone.

Common side effects include:
- Nausea or an upset stomach
- Constipation
- Abdominal discomfort or cramps
- Changes in bowel movements
