Whilst the majority of patients who contract Covid-19 infection have a milder form of the disease, and do not require hospitalization, data shows that the mortality rate is high amongst the minority of people who get severe Covid-19 infection. In one study from Wuhan, China, the mortality rate was 62% among critically ill patients with Covid-19 infection and 81% among those requiring mechanical ventilation. (Lancet 2020 28 March-3 April; 395(10229): 1014–1015.) It therefore seems that therapeutic strategies designed to reduce the risk of progression from a mild to more severe form of the disease, would be important in reducing Covid-19 deaths.

Whilst approximately 11% of the world's population suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), there has not been much in the way of new treatments on the horizon. Researchers have discovered that receptors that cause itchy skin also exist in the gut. These receptors may mediate what the researchers termed "gut itch" which results in the patient experiencing chronic gut pain. This opens up new possibilities in the field of IBS research and treatment.

An interesting study published this month found that women consuming three main meals per day had a 32% reduction in likelihood of having IBS symptoms, compared to women who only ate one main meal per day. After adjusting data for potential confounding factors, the risk reduction was 44%. However, when the men in the study were added into the mix, the risk reduction disappeared. Further studies will be needed to confirm these observations.
