I need to speak on something that's been sitting heavy on my heart. Women are not statistics. We are mothers, daughters, sisters, friends. We build homes, we build communities, we build the world. No woman should have to live in fear of simply existing.

My heart is with every family who has lost someone to this violence. It is not fair, and it should never have to be this way. Say their names. Remember them. And let's keep pushing for a world where this stops.

Took some time after the conference to explore Guiyang 🌧️ Walked along the Nanming River to Jiaxiu Tower, then found my way to Cuiwei Garden, where the Ming dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming used to write poetry over 500 years ago.

Thrilled to share that my essay just won Second Prize at the 4th International Graduate Student Essay and Academic Seminar on TCM, part of the 8th China-ASEAN Traditional Medicine Innovation and Development Conference in Guiyang, China 🎉

The paper is about a question that's been on my mind for a while: China has spent decades scientifically validating its traditional medicine (that's how we got artemisinin, the malaria drug that won a Nobel Prize). South Africa has incredible traditional healing knowledge too, but it's never gotten that same investment or research attention.

So I proposed a four-step framework for how the two systems could actually learn from each other, instead of one just studying the other: getting proper consent from communities, healers and scientists doing research together as equals, adapting standards so they respect tradition, and making sure any benefits get shared fairly. I used a South African plant called Sutherlandia (the "cancer bush") as a real example of how it could work.
