A little week in the life of an educational psychologist…

Some days are filled with therapy sessions, feelings books, bubbles and play. Other days are filled with assessment prep, reports, resources and study skills workshops.

Behind every session, activity and resource is the same goal: helping children, teens and families feel understood, supported and more equipped for the world around them.

Little me had lots of dreams growing up and wanted to be many different things. Somehow, those dreams became a space where children, teens and families can feel seen, heard and supported.

Wanting to help people feel okay led me on a long journey to becoming an educational psychologist.

Grateful for the little girl and all her dreams, and for every client, family and learner who allows me to be part of their story.

Supporting children, adolescents, young adults, parents and schools through every stage of learning and emotional development.

My services include psycho educational and school readiness assessments, therapy and play therapy, career and subject choice guidance, school support and assessment accommodations and practical study skills workshops.

Each service is tailored to the individual, with the aim of fostering understanding, confidence and meaningful growth.

In play therapy, children are given a safe and gentle space to explore, name and understand their emotions through play. Sometimes a child may not yet have the words to explain what they are feeling, but through stories, toys, games and creative expression, their inner world can begin to make sense.

Play therapy can support children in learning how to recognise different feelings, understand what happens in their bodies when emotions become overwhelming and practise healthier ways to calm, cope and communicate.

Emotional regulation is not about teaching children to stop feeling. It is about helping them feel safe enough to notice their emotions, express them appropriately and develop tools to manage the big feelings when they come.

Through play, children can learn that all feelings are welcome and that they do not have to manage them alone.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend ADOS-2 training, and I am feeling both grateful and excited to continue expanding my knowledge in the area of autism assessment.

The ADOS-2 is a structured, standardised observational assessment that can form an important part of a comprehensive Autism Spectrum Disorder evaluation. It allows clinicians to observe aspects such as social communication, interaction, play, imagination, restricted interests and repetitive behaviours in a carefully structured way.

This training has given me valuable insight into how to approach ASD assessment in a more comprehensive and integrated way. I am excited to continue building my skills and to soon be able to offer more specialised autism assessment services within my practice.

Always learning, always growing, always aiming to better support the children, adolescents and families I work with.

After a long school day, “How was school?” can sometimes feel too big for a child to answer.

Children may be tired, overstimulated, unsure where to start or not yet ready to talk. More specific, gentle questions can make it easier for them to reflect on their day and share small moments with you.

These prompts are not about asking more questions, but about creating moments of connection. Sometimes one thoughtful question, asked with curiosity and no pressure, can open the door to a meaningful conversation.

Try choosing one question at a time and see where it leads.
