Today is World Spine Day.

A day to raise awareness of spinal health and the impact that spinal conditions can have on people throughout their lives.

Looking after your spine doesn't have to be complicated.

Move regularly.
Stay active.
Change position throughout the day.
Pay attention to how you use your body.
Make time for your health.

And if something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it - seek appropriate professional advice.

Spinal health is something worth thinking about throughout your life.

Movement doesn't always have to mean a workout.

A walk around the block.
Standing up from your desk.
Taking the stairs.
Changing position throughout the day.

These are all simple ways to bring a little more movement into everyday life.

With World Spine Day on Friday, it's a good reminder that looking after your spine can be part of ordinary, everyday habits.

You don't have to overhaul your whole day.

Move when you can. Keep moving.

So why do we look at posture?

Because it can give us useful information.

The way someone is positioned can be one part of a neuro-musculoskeletal assessment and may help us notice patterns worth exploring further.

But posture is only a snapshot. We don't stand, sit or move in exactly the same way all day - and there isn't one single “perfect” posture that every person should have.

That's why we consider posture alongside other relevant information, including your health history, movement, joint function and neurological function.

Posture is one piece of the puzzle - not the whole picture.

Advanced BioStructural Correction™ (ABC) is the primary Chiropractic technique we use at Peak.

One of the things we value about ABC™ is that it can be adapted for people of different ages, body shapes, sizes and abilities.

But having a primary technique doesn't mean we only have one tool.

Our Chiropractors have training in additional techniques that can be used when appropriate for the individual.

Babies and pregnancy are two examples where another technique may sometimes be indicated.

We also see people with very different physical abilities and circumstances, and part of providing individualised Chiropractic care is adapting how we position and work with each person.

For us, it's not about having a huge list of techniques.

It's about having the knowledge, experience and flexibility to use the right approach for the person in front of us.

ABC™ is our primary technique. Our wider toolbox allows us to adapt when needed.

What does a Chiropractor actually look for?

When you come in for a neuro-musculoskeletal assessment, we're not looking at just one thing.

We may consider how you move, how your joints are functioning, neurological function, muscle function and how different parts of the body are working together.

But these findings don't exist in isolation.

Your health history, your individual circumstances and what has brought you in all provide important context.

The body is connected - and that's why we look at the bigger picture.

An assessment is about much more than finding the place that hurts.

At Peak, we look at the bigger neuro-musculoskeletal picture, combining your history with the findings from an appropriate physical assessment.

Depending on the individual, this may include looking at movement, joint function, neurological function, muscle function and coordination.

Sometimes an assessment gives us everything we need to make recommendations. Sometimes it tells us that further investigation or referral is appropriate.

And importantly, we believe you should understand what we've found and why we're making a particular recommendation.

Assess. Understand. Explain.

That's an important part of Chiropractic care.

A little professional development update from Dr Greg…

Back in July this year, Greg travelled to Johannesburg to attend a Webster Technique seminar organised by Pediatric Chiropractic Africa (PCA) in collaboration with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA).

He subsequently completed the requirements for his Webster Technique certification.

The Webster Technique is a specific Chiropractic technique focused on the biomechanics of the pelvis and sacroiliac region and is particularly relevant to Chiropractic care during pregnancy.

As a neuro-musculoskeletal-focused Chiropractic practice, continuing education is an important part of what we do.

There is always more to learn, more to understand and new skills to develop.

Well done, Dr Greg!

There are plenty of ideas about what Chiropractic is - and isn't.

Some come from personal experience. Some come from things we've heard from friends or family. And some are simply assumptions that have been around for a long time.

So we thought we'd unpack a few of the more common ones.

Chiropractic care is individual. What brings one person through our doors may be completely different from someone else, which is why a proper conversation and assessment are important before making recommendations about care.

And perhaps the biggest thing we'd like people to know?

It's okay to ask questions.

Understanding what we're recommending, why we're recommending it and what your options are should be part of the conversation.

You should never feel uncomfortable asking questions about your health.

What happens during an appointment?
Why are you doing that assessment?
What does that mean?
What are my options?

These are all perfectly reasonable questions.

At Peak, we believe good communication is an important part of Chiropractic care. We want you to feel comfortable asking questions, understanding what's being discussed and being involved in decisions about your care.

Your questions are welcome.
