Iron Deficiency in Children – What Parents Should Know 🩺

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional problems in childhood and can affect growth, learning, behaviour, immunity, and brain development. Because symptoms can be mild or gradual, many children may be iron deficient before it is noticed.

Why is iron important? 🧠πŸ’ͺ
Iron helps the body make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the brain and muscles. Low iron levels can lead to tiredness, poor concentration, irritability, headaches, pale skin, frequent infections, and in severe cases, anaemia and developmental delay.

Children at higher risk πŸ‘Άβž‘οΈπŸ§’:
β€’ Toddlers drinking large amounts of cow’s milk πŸ₯›
β€’ Picky or selective eaters 🍽️
β€’ Rapid growth phases πŸ“ˆ
β€’ Premature babies πŸ₯
β€’ Chronic illness or gut conditions 🩻

Common causes ⚠️:
β€’ Diet low in iron-rich foods πŸ₯©πŸ₯¬
β€’ Excess milk intake (>500 ml/day in toddlers) πŸ₯›
β€’ Poor absorption πŸ”„
β€’ Blood loss (including intestinal parasites) 🦠

How is it diagnosed? πŸ”¬
Your doctor may request:
β€’ FBC (Full Blood Count) – checks haemoglobin and red cell size
β€’ Ferritin level – shows iron stores

Ferritin is often the first marker to drop, meaning deficiency can exist before anaemia develops.

Treatment πŸ’ŠπŸ₯—
If confirmed:
βœ” Iron supplementation when indicated (dose based on age & weight)
βœ” Iron-rich diet adjustments
βœ” Vitamin C with iron to improve absorption 🍊
βœ” Avoid milk around iron doses

Iron-rich foods 🍽️:
β€’ Lean meats, chicken, fish πŸ—πŸŸ
β€’ Eggs πŸ₯š
β€’ Beans & lentils 🫘
β€’ Dark green vegetables πŸ₯¬
β€’ Fortified cereals 🌾

Prevention βœ…
βœ” Balanced diet
βœ” Limit excess milk πŸ₯›
βœ” Routine deworming where recommended πŸͺ±
βœ” Regular health checks πŸ“Š

Follow-up πŸ”
Children treated for iron deficiency should usually be reviewed after 3 months to repeat blood tests and confirm iron stores have improved.

Iron & Attention 🧩
Emerging research suggests some children with attention or behavioural difficulties may have low ferritin levels. Iron plays a role in dopamine function, which influences focus, sleep, and impulse control. While iron deficiency does not cause ADHD, correcting low iron may help improve attention and behaviour in certain children.

If you suspect your child may be iron deficient, consult your paediatrician. Early detection supports better learning, behaviour, sleep and development.

🦠 Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) & Herpangina – What Parents Should Know

We are currently seeing an increase in hand, foot and mouth disease and herpangina in young children.

πŸ”Ή What causes it?
Both are common viral infections (usually enteroviruses) that spread easily, especially in crèches and schools.

πŸ”Ή Common symptoms include:
β€’ Fever
β€’ Sore throat
β€’ Painful mouth ulcers or blisters
β€’ Rash or small blisters on the hands, feet, nappy area or around the mouth
β€’ Drooling, poor feeding, irritability
β€’ Herpangina refers to blisters and ulcers on the back of the throat and soft palate without skin involvement

πŸ”Ή How is it spread?
Through saliva, respiratory droplets, stool, and close contact.

πŸ”Ή Treatment:
There is no specific cure, but the illness is usually mild and self-limiting. Treatment focuses on:
βœ”οΈ Pain and fever control
βœ”οΈ Keeping your child well hydrated
βœ”οΈ Soft, cool foods (avoid acidic or salty foods)

🚫 Antibiotics do NOT help, as this is a viral infection.

πŸ”Ή When to see a doctor urgently:
β€’ Your child is not drinking or has very few wet nappies
β€’ Persistent high fever
β€’ Severe pain or lethargy
β€’ Signs of dehydration
β€’ Symptoms lasting longer than 7 days

πŸ”Ή When can my child return to school/crΓ¨che?
Once they are fever-free and feeling well and there are no new lesions and the old ones are starting to form a scab, even if the rash hasn’t fully disappeared.

Good hand hygiene is the best way to prevent spread 🧼

🌑️ Fever and Malaise in Children – Often a Viral Illness 🦠

We are currently seeing many children with fever, tiredness (malaise), headaches, body aches, and poor appetite. In most cases, these symptoms are caused by a viral infection (viraemia).

πŸ‘Ά What is viraemia?
It means a virus is circulating in the body. This is very common in children and usually improves on its own over a few days.

πŸ’Š Treatment:
β€’ Rest and plenty of fluids
β€’ Paracetamol or ibuprofen for fever and discomfort (as advised)
β€’ Antibiotics are not effective against viruses

⏳ How long does it last?
Most children start to improve within 2–4 days, although tiredness may last a bit longer.

🚨 When to seek medical care urgently:
β€’ Fever lasting more than 3 days
β€’ Poor drinking or signs of dehydration
β€’ Severe headache, neck stiffness, persistent vomiting
β€’ Breathing difficulty, rash that doesn’t fade, or extreme lethargy
β€’ Any fever in infants under 3 months

🏠 Keep your child at home while they have fever and feel unwell to allow recovery and prevent spread.
