CELEBRATING 19 years of ANNELIZE GERICKE PHYSIOTHERAPY!
19 years ago a young and very enthusiastic physio (freshly graduated), just finished her community service at Kimberley Hospital and moved to Cape Town to start her own practice. An amazing opportunity came up and she grabbed it with both hands! Always trusting God to lead her and guide her and thanking Him for opportunities and open doors!
Today we celebrate 19 years since we opened our doors and so thankful for every patient who trusts us with their healing and restoration journey!
May we continue to provide excellent care!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US🎉🥳🍾

NOISY KNEES
Year on year the most asked question in my practice: noisy knees.
Most of the time they are normal! Golden rule is to keep moving - MOTION IS LOTION.

Get those ankles mobile and strong!

The forward lean calf raises ankle exercises is such a good one….. i also add heel raises with the foot tilted in-and outwards for my patients - I chase the ‘corners’ of the ankle joint, this seems to make such a difference in any remaining niggles they might have post injury rehab.

🌡️ Fever in children: let’s talk about it (without the panic)

Fever is one of the most common reasons parents worry — but here’s the good news:

👉 Fever is not the enemy.
It’s your child’s body doing its job in fighting an infection which could be viral or bacterial.

📌 What is a fever?
A temperature of 38°C or higher.

🧠 Here’s what really matters (hint: not just the number):
Instead of focusing only on the thermometer, look at your child:

* Are they drinking fluids?
* Are they responsive and making eye contact?
* Are they breathing comfortably?
* Do they perk up after fever medicine?

A child with a high fever who still plays, drinks and smiles is often less concerning than a child with a lower temperature who looks very unwell.

💊 Fever medicine 101

* Paracetamol and or Ibuprofen can be given every 4–6 hours
* Maximum 4 doses of each in 24 hours
* Dose according to weight, not age
* Fever medicine is for comfort, not to “chase” the temperature

🤝 What can paracetamol be given with?
✔️ Ibuprofen (they work differently)
✔️ Antibiotics (if prescribed)
❌ Avoid double-dosing with cold/flu syrups that already contain paracetamol
❌Do not give a cold bath. If they shiver cover them and if they sweat uncover them.

🚩 Seek medical advice urgently if your child:

* Is under 3 months with fever
* Is difficult to wake or unusually sleepy
* Has trouble breathing
* Has a seizure
* Has a rash that doesn’t fade when pressed
* Is not drinking or passing urine
* Is vomiting repeatedly
* Or if you’re worried, parental instinct matters

🤍
You don’t need to be brave at home.
If something feels off, it’s always okay to have your child checked.

Paediatrician

TISSUE HEALING

As our bodies go through the healing process we go through 3 key phases of recovery, here is a quick breakdown:

1️⃣ Inflammatory Phase (0-7 days): The body’s immediate response to injury: swelling, redness, & sometimes pain.

2️⃣ Proliferative Phase (7-21 days): New tissue begins to form. Movement & direct tissue loading is key during these next two phases.

3️⃣ Remodeling Phase (3 weeks to 12 months): The new tissue strengthens & matures. Gradual return to full activity is important to prevent re-injury. 🏋️‍♀️

‼️It’s important to note that different tissues heal at different rates! And more importantly, the severity of the injury also impacts the length of recovery. You’ll notice that the range of healing times is quite large! So please - respect that you may recover faster or slower than your friend with the “same injury”.
