July is Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month. This is a rare form of cancer that starts in the bones or in soft tissue, such as muscles, fat or blood vessels.
While sarcoma makes up only 1% of all adult cancers, it accounts for 15 to 20% of childhood cancers. This means it affects our youngest patients more than most other cancers do.

Did you know that Icon and Cancercare South Africa have a specialist unit just for children, teenagers and young adults? It's called Crayon, and it's based in the Western Cape.

Together, we are tackling childhood cancer with care and courage. Our aim is to take the fear out of treatment, so every young patient can have the best possible journey.

Finishing treatment is a milestone worth celebrating. But for many survivors, it also brings a mix of feelings that can be hard to explain.

Some people feel relieved. Others feel anxious. Without the structure of regular appointments, it can feel like you are suddenly on your own. This is something many survivors experience. It even has a name: "re-entry anxiety."

Life after treatment is not about going back to who you were before. It is about getting to know who you are now and building a life that feels good.

Your care team can support you through this stage too. Follow-up care, check-ups, and conversations about your wellbeing do not stop when treatment does.

Cancer affects more than your body. It affects your mind too.

Anxiety, sadness, anger, and even guilt are common experiences for people living with cancer. Some people feel relief when treatment ends and then feel lost. Others feel fear about what comes next.

These emotions are real. They are valid. And they deserve the same attention as your physical health.

Please speak to your care team if you are struggling emotionally. Support is available, and asking for help is a sign of courage, not weakness.

Treatment days are not easy. Some days, getting out of bed is enough. Some days, that is everything. Living with cancer while going through chemotherapy, radiation, or other treatment takes enormous strength. A strength that is not always visible from the outside.

We see you. We see what you carry.

If you are currently in treatment, here are a few gentle reminders:
• Rest when your body asks you to.
• Eat small, nourishing meals when you can.
• Talk to your care team about anything that feels different or worrying.
• Accept help. You do not have to do this alone.

What we want you to know is this: you do not have to figure everything out at once. You do not have to be brave every single day.

Take it one step at a time. Ask questions. Lean on the people around you. And know that your Icon care team is here to walk this road with you.
