Our Pilot Project of 10 orthopaedic procedures is now done and dusted. We are incredibly grateful that the entire process ran smoothly. Now, we can move forward with confidence, ready to impact even more lives!

We are especially proud that our optional Whole-Person Care and Support program was embraced with overwhelming positivity by all 10 pilot patients. At The Goodness Project, we believe that caring for the person behind the medical procedure is what truly sets our project apart.

We were delighted to spend the day with the staff and residents who welcomed us warmly and were excited to take part in the free health screening tests. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the day so special!

For more than 20 years, a special tradition has been bringing joy to families and the community around Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt.

Weather permitting, new dads are invited to hoist a blue or pink flag above the hospital entrance on the afternoon after their baby’s birth. The flags proudly announce the arrival of our newest little boys and girls – and give everyone passing by a glimpse of the day’s celebrations. Congratulations to Mr Andre and Mrs Juanita Claassen welcomed their baby boy on 7 September.

This much-loved tradition was the wonderful idea of Fides Hauptfleisch, who is retiring at the end of September after an incredible 36 years as a professional nurse at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt.

Fides came up with the idea more than two decades ago when staff were challenged to find ways to make the hospital’s maternity offering truly unique. Inspired by photographs of her own birth, when her father had raised a flag to celebrate her arrival, Fides suggested bringing this heartwarming tradition to our hospital. The idea was embraced – and has been proudly carried on ever since.

Today, the flags have become a familiar and much-loved sight above our entrance, celebrating the precious new lives welcomed into our hospital each day.

As Fides prepares to begin her next chapter, we celebrate her remarkable contribution and thank her for a simple but beautiful idea that has become part of the heart and history of Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt.

Thank you, Fides, for leaving such a special legacy.

Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt (representing private healthcare) and the Goodness Project (non-profit company),the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital (public healthcare) are excited and privileged to collaborate in a pioneering research project that will evaluate the impact of an innovative Public-Private Partnership (PPP) aimed at improving access to hip and knee arthroplasty surgery for patients in South Africa’s public healthcare system.

For many patients, joint replacement surgery is not just about mobility — it is about restoring independence, dignity, hope, and the ability to live life fully again.

The first hip replacements were performed on 2 patients on Friday 14 August at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt successfully on Mr B Khumalo and Mr L Lakey.
