Team Leader. Airway. Circulation. Defib. Drugs. Time Keeper. CPR Coach. Evaluator.

In Monday's Advanced Resuscitation for Professionals course, everyone around the manikin had a name tag with a job on it. Everyone had to work as team bringing their specific skills to the table for a successful resus.

The algorithm is the easy part. Running the room is what takes practice.

Stop the bleed. Vitals. Fluids. Oxygen. Keep them comfortable.

That was the whiteboard sequence on last week's Medical Care course (STCW A-VI/4-2), the Ship Captain's Medical Course for navigating officers.

At sea there's no hospital down the hall. The officer is the extension of the doctor ashore, assessing, treating and monitoring the patient, with radio medical advice, until the ship reaches port.

So it was stethoscopes, BP cuffs, pen torches and plenty of hands-on practice, with the 40-hour course.

Last week a group of BAA and AEA's attended our CPG update where they spent two days in class updating their skills and knowledge on the new guidelines from the HPCSA.
