Our Medical First Aid, (STCW A-VI/4-1 & A-VI/1-3), delegates got to practice putting bandages and splinting legs on the course yesterday.

Using this sequence improves the success rate for the Valsalva manoeuvre from 17% to 43%
(defined as the patient being back in sinus rhythm at one minute) in the REVERT trial.

Airway, Circulation, CPR Coach, Team Leader, Time Keeper—every person has a precise role. The real test of simulation training isn't just knowing individual CPR skills; it’s putting it together as a team with the goal of a successful resus.

Last week’s ACLS course put that teamwork to the test, and by the end, the team had completely transformed.

Most spinal immobilisation devices are rigid from the start. The vacuum stretcher is the opposite — it goes on loose, and only becomes rigid once you take air out of it.

This week's ITLS group under instructor Carolyn spent real time on that sequence — positioning, packing the mattress in close, sealing the edges, watching it stiffen. It's less intuitive than it looks, and it only works if the moulding happens before the vacuum does.
