There's a moment in every PALS simulation where it clicks. Students arrive with a solid BLS foundation. But in the sim, when basic measures aren't enough β€” when the infant isn't responding and the team has to escalate β€” that's where the real learning happens on our PALS course.

The most rewarding part? Seeing students connect theory to practice and realise they can handle it." β€” Marra, PALS Instructor

Last week's ACLS course was an all-ladies group β€” doctors and nurses working through the full resuscitation cycle together.

The scenarios ran exactly as they should: team leader calling the rhythm, compression's going on while someone else managed the airway, syringes drawn up and ready. Defibrillator pads on, shock delivered, back to compression's β€” no gaps. The resus timer running on a phone, the Philips monitor showing wave forms in the background. Everyone knew their role.

Congrats to all who completed the course. πŸ‘

CPR & AED Awareness Week 2026 is observed annually from June 1 to June 7. The week-long campaign highlights the lifesaving power of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) education, AED (Automated External Defibrillator) accessibility, and community preparedness.

Although the South African NDOH observes CPR week in November, we are definitely co-celebrating with the US.

Firefighters don't just fight fires!

When City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue respond to a call, they're often the first medical hands on scene. This week, a group of firemen and firewomen came to PEC for their 2-day AEA CPG Update, to ensure they're able to respond to medical with the latest protocols.

What you're seeing in these photos is needle cricothyroidotomy. A last-resort emergency airway procedure for when a patient can't be ventilated or intubated. Locate the cricothyroid membrane. Insert the needle. Thread the catheter. Connect to oxygen. Every step practised until it's muscle memory.

A child in crisis doesn't wait for you to be ready!

Yesterday at PEC, a group of healthcare providers spent the day working through paediatric emergencies as a team, in real time, under pressure. It's not just a lecture, it's a resus room.

"My goal with these simulations is to help clinicians feel prepared for the reality of paediatric emergencies," says Marra Venter, the PALS Instructor who led yesterday's course. "Confidence in paediatric emergencies comes from practice, structure, and preparation."
