Bridging the Gap in Paediatric Care 🩺✨

Bullying isn’t just a schoolyard issue—it is a critical youth mental and physical health concern.

Recently, Genevieve Burrow, Project Manager at The Youth Hub and Senior Registered Counsellor, was invited to deliver an hour-long presentation on bullying to private practice paediatricians.

Why is this so important?
Many private-sector paediatricians are on the frontlines of adolescent health, yet standard medical screening often leaves peer victimisation undetected. When young people visit the doctor for unexplained somatic symptoms like headaches, stomach aches, or sudden anxiety, bullying is often the root cause hiding in plain sight.

The Local & Global Reality:

Global Impact: ~32% of learners worldwide experience peer victimisation at school monthly.

In South Africa: Over ~57% of adolescents experience bullying, with over 40% of high school learners experiencing severe threats, physical assault, or digital extortion on school premises.

The Silence: Over 65% of South African victimised youth never tell a parent or teacher due to fear or hopelessness.

Equipping Doctors with Practical Tools:
Genevieve provided vital psychoeducation on the HEEADSSS framework, guiding doctors on how to effectively screen for bullying during clinical consultations.

The session was exceptionally well received, with around 50 paediatricians in attendance. The level of interest was so high that the Q&A segment stretched past 30 minutes, sparking incredible engagement and crucial discussion around adolescent care.

When youth stay silent at home and school, equipped medical professionals can become their ultimate line of defense. We are proud of Genevieve’s leadership in empowering healthcare providers and advocating for youth mental health! 💡💙

One Monday, 3rd August 2026 The Youth Hub staff joined the Groote Schuur Adolescent Centre of Excellence Women's Day Activity.

The day started with a movement session with personal trainer Mark(Lyra Southern Africa), at the GSH Wellness Hub. The session focused on the importance of finding time during day-to-day activities to incorporate exercise to and care for our bodies.

We were then invited to Beantree Cafe' GSH for a delicious breakfast filled with laughs and beautiful memories.

The day was even more memorable with a special gift exchange amongst colleagues, that was so thoughtful and so much fun!

All in all, a fabulous day of self-care for both the mind and body. Here's to us this Women's Month!
