Charlene is the founder of the Relax Into Birth programme and is a WOMBS trained doula. She is a Hypnotherapist (non medical) and has a degree in Journalism (2003) and writes for a host of South African women’s monthly magazines, including Longevity and Life Healthcare. She also offers holistic massage using Colour Therapy through Reflexology and Usui Reiki Ryoho for pregnancy and the postnatal pe

riod. When Charlene fell pregnant, she could not believe nor trust her body to attempt natural birth, but through education and encouragement, she changed from planning an elective caesarean in hospital to having a homebirth with an independent midwife and doula in attendance.

“Working as a doula and creating the Relax Into Birth programme has given me a very practical perspective on birth. My aim at every birth is to mirror exactly what the mother needs in any given situation, so that the experience she has is a positive one,” she says. “My experience has taught me how important it is to educate and support mothers through their pregnancy, labour and birth so that they know they have options available to them to make informed decisions at every point on their birthing journey.”

👣 Did you know that those tiny, adorable feet of newborns hold an incredible secret? As a doula, I'm here to share with you an intriguing fact about these little miracles.

✨ Baby feet have a magical ability called the "Babinski reflex." It's a natural instinct that causes their toes to fan out and their big toe to extend when the sole of their foot is stroked. This reflex is present in infants up to around two years old and gradually disappears as they develop their voluntary motor control.

👶 This reflex is thought to be a protective mechanism for babies. By stimulating the sole of their foot, it helps them prepare for crawling and walking, ultimately supporting their early motor skills development.

🌈 The sensation of the Babinski reflex not only engages their muscles but also helps stimulate the connections in their developing brain. It's truly fascinating to witness the intricate ways in which a baby's body and mind are interconnected right from the start.

A birth on this Mother's Day Morning. How perfect is that?
If you've been trying to reach me on messenger or email this week, here's where I've been instead... at three hospital births and one home birth. All babies and mamas are well and healthy.

And her baby boy, who arrived 2 days ago for her lightning fast home water birth. Her baby boy came swimming out within one hour of our arrival.
