I just spent an incredible few days at the Southern African Sexual Health Association (SASHA) 2026 Conference - Into The Fray this weekend.

This conference was such a wonderful reminder of how much there is to learn, question and share within s*xual health. And how important it is to keep pushing for healthcare that is inclusive, evidence-based and affirming.

I had the privilege of co-facilitating a workshop with Dr. Nicole Chilimigras, called “Sex On The Spectrum: The Interplay Between Nervous Systems and Pleasure Systems in the Context of Neurodiversity”. I shared an update on current research, and ideas around neurodiversity, sensory processing, pleasure, s*xual difficulties, gender and s*xual diversity, kink, and creating more accessible approaches to s*x.

One of the highlights for me was meeting Professor Eli Coleman, one of my professional heroes in the field of transgender health (I even got a big hug!). His work has influenced the way we understand and approach gender-affirming healthcare, and meeting someone whose work has shaped so much of the field was genuinely so special.

I’m leaving the conference feeling inspired, grateful for the conversations and new connections, and even more motivated to keep learning, teaching and advocating for s*xual healthcare that makes room for the full diversity of human bodies, identities, relationships and experiences.

I'm already looking forward to the World Assn. for Sexual Health Conference in 2027!

🌸 Little Reminder: Your body deserves kindness.

It's okay if your body doesn't look, feel, or move the way it did before. But it also doesn't mean you have to suffer or grin-and-bear-it when things are difficult.

Menopause isn’t the end of your story, it’s a new chapter. With the right support, you can move through this stage with confidence, clarity, and strength. ✨

Noticing that your skin feels drier, your hair is thinning, or your usual skincare routine suddenly doesn't seem to be working anymore?

You’re not imagining it. Skin and hair can change during perimenopause and menopause as oestrogen levels fluctuate and decline.

Oestrogen plays an important role in maintaining skin thickness, collagen, hydration and elasticity. Changes in hormone levels can contribute to drier or more sensitive skin, reduced elasticity, and increased fine lines.

Hair can also become finer or thinner, with some people noticing increased shedding or changes in texture.

These changes are a normal part of the menopause transition for many people, but they can still be frustrating and affect how you feel about your body.

Looking after your skin, nutrition, sleep and overall health can help, and there may be medical treatment options to consider depending on your individual symptoms and medical history.

Menopause care isn't just about hot flushes. It’s about understanding the many ways hormonal changes can affect your body.

If you're experiencing changes that are bothering you, a personalised menopause consultation can help you explore what’s happening and what options may be appropriate for you.

Needing to p*e more often? Suddenly having to urgently go? Leaking when you cough, sneeze or exercise? Or experiencing recurrent urinary tract infections?

Bladder and urinary symptoms are common during perimenopause and menopause, but they’re often overlooked when we talk about menopause.

As oestrogen levels fall, the tissues of the va**na, urethra and bladder can become thinner, more sensitive and less resilient. This can contribute to urinary urgency, frequency, leakage, discomfort and recurrent UTIs.

These symptoms are common but not normal, you do not simply have to put up with them.

There are several treatment options available, including lifestyle measures, pelvic floor support, local va**nal oestrogen, and/or other hormones when appropriate. The right approach depends on your symptoms and your individual health history.

NB: Persistent or new urinary symptoms deserve proper assessment, whether menopause related or not.

We provide menopause care that looks at the whole picture, including your s*xual and urinary health. We are available in Sea Point, Cape Town, or online for patients across South Africa.

Has your interest in s*x changed? Maybe you’re thinking about s*x less often, finding it harder to become ar*used, or simply feeling like your desire has disappeared.

Low libido is common during perimenopause and menopause but it’s often much more complicated than simply “having low hormones.”

Changing oestrogen levels can contribute to va**nal dryness and painful s*x, while hormonal changes can also affect mood, sleep, energy and s*xual response. Add stress, relationship factors, body image and the demands of everyday life, and it’s easy to see why desire can change.

💡 A change in libido is common, but you don’t have to dismiss it or simply accept it.

There are many ways we can approach low desire, depending on what’s contributing to it. Sometimes treating va**nal symptoms or improving sleep makes a significant difference. Sometimes we need to look more broadly at hormones, medications, mood, relationships and s*xual well-being.

If you’d like to understand your libido in more depth, I’ve also created Libido Academy, an online course designed to help you better understand s*xual desire, the factors that influence it, and practical ways to work towards a more satisfying s*x life that helps you feel more connected to yourself and your partner.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be speaking at the Southern African S*xual Health Association Conference next month.

I’ll be co-facilitating a workshop titled:

S*x On The Spectrum: The Interplay Between Nervous Systems and Pleasure Systems in the Context of Neurodiversity

We’ll be exploring the fascinating intersection between neurodiversity and s*xual well-being, and how understanding the way different nervous systems experience sensation, stress, safety and pleasure can help us rethink the way we approach s*xual health.

Looking forward to learning, sharing ideas and connecting with colleagues who are passionate about making s*xual healthcare more inclusive 😊.

See you at the conference!
