Have you been living with eczema for more than a year?
The UCT Lung Institute is running a clinical trial for a new eczema treatment and is looking for participants aged 16 and older.
Participants will be seen by doctors and a dermatologist in Cape Town. The study runs for 4 to 6 weeks. This is a chance to access specialist care and help improve eczema treatment in South Africa.

👃 Allergy Myths Busted: Nasal sprays are addictive
❌ That's not true.
Prescription corticosteroid nasal sprays used for allergic rhinitis are not addictive. When used correctly, they can help reduce inflammation in the nose and improve symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, a runny nose and itchy eyes.
The confusion often comes from over-the-counter decongestant nasal sprays. These sprays can cause rebound congestion if they are used too often or for too many days in a row. This means the nose can feel blocked again when the spray wears off.
If you have allergic rhinitis, the right nasal spray and correct technique can make a big difference to symptom control.
💡 Professional Tip: Always use nasal sprays as directed by your healthcare professional. If you are needing a decongestant spray for more than a few days, ask for medical advice.

🎓 Congratulations to the 2026 AFSA Fellowship Recipients
AFSA is proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 AFSA Fellowships.
These fellowships support healthcare professionals who are committed to improving allergy care in South Africa, especially in communities where access to specialist support may be limited.

This year’s recipients are:
Dr Kristin Abegail Silawule: A dedicated child health doctor at Madwaleni District Hospital in the Eastern Cape, with a special interest in paediatric care, asthma and eczema.
Nurse Moiteri Belinah Mathebula: A committed primary healthcare nurse at Nelspruit Health Centre in Mpumalanga, focused on improving childhood allergy care and patient support.
Ms Nicole Govender: A public health dietitian in KwaZulu-Natal with a strong focus on infant and young child feeding, including support for human milk bank services.
Congratulations to Dr Silawule, Nurse Mathebula and Dietitian Govender. We look forward to seeing the impact they will make in their communities.
