Somewhere during that slow Stellenbosch week, something shifted.

The jazz was playing. My shoulders dropped. My breathing slowed.
And I felt a quiet kind of joy I hadn't realised I'd been missing.

It reminded me of something important:
Feelings aren't problems to fix. They're information.

✅Overwhelm might be telling you to put something down.
✅Shutdown might be showing you where your limits are.
✅Anxiety might be alerting you that something doesn't feel safe or sustainable.

They're not “good” or “bad”.
They're asking to be heard.

So this week, instead of asking:
“Why am I feeling this?”

Try asking:
“What is this feeling trying to teach me?”

Get curious. Don't judge.
Sometimes it's trying to keep you safe.
Sometimes it's reminding you what you love. ❤️

We'll explore this together at my live workshop on 8 September.

That paintbrush taught me something important.

The moment I started painting, my Protective Self showed up:

“You’re wasting time”
“You should be working”
“You’re falling behind”

I used to believe those thoughts.

Now I ask:
What are you trying to protect me from?

And then:
What would I choose if I didn’t have to obey you?

Because underneath the noise, there’s often a quieter voice:

“This brings me joy.”
“I don’t have to earn rest.”
“I trust my pace.”

That’s your Authentic Self.

So next time a harsh thought shows up, don’t fight it. Get curious.

What is it protecting you from?

And what would you choose without it?

Last time, I told you about that afternoon in Stellenbosch — the question that stopped me mid-sip and the paintbrush I hadn't picked up in years.

Today, I want to give you the language for what I was feeling:
The Protective Self vs. the Authentic Self.

Your Protective Self developed to keep you safe. It’s smart, fast and often invisible.

It can show up as:
→ perfectionism
→ overworking
→ people-pleasing
→ procrastination
→ avoidance
→ self-criticism

It isn't broken.
It's doing exactly what it was built to do.

Then there's your Authentic Self the part guided by your values, creativity, courage, curiosity, connection and purpose.

The goal isn't to get rid of your Protective Self.

It's to help it soften enough for your Authentic Self to lead.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed, burned out, stuck or like you're constantly pushing yourself to “do better,” this may not be a character flaw.

Your protective self might simply be working overtime.

I’ll be exploring this more in the weeks ahead and on 8 September, I'll be taking you deeper into it in my live workshop.

A few weeks ago in Stellenbosch, I asked myself:

“If there were no fears, expectations or financial constraints, what would I choose?”

I had no answer.

So I did something I hadn’t done in years. I put away my laptop, found some watercolours and painted. I listened to jazz. I slowed down.

And something shifted.

I felt curious. Creative. Unrushed. Like myself.

It made me wonder how often our protective self, the part that overworks, pleases, perfects and pushes through — drowns out our authentic self.

The part that knows what matters.
The part that wants to create, connect and explore.

So I’ll leave you with the question that stayed with me:

If there were no fears, expectations or financial constraints, what would your authentic self choose?

You don’t need an answer today. Just let it sit.

And if you feel that little stirring inside, join me on 8 September for Your Journey Back to Yourself.

Perfectionism doesn’t always look like excellence.

Sometimes it looks like exhaustion.
Overthinking.
Rewriting the same email 6 times.
Starting projects you never finish because they never feel “good enough.”

And underneath it all?

Fear.

Fear of getting it wrong.
Fear of being judged.
Fear that if you’re not exceptional, you’ll disappoint people or yourself.

So many intelligent, capable people stay stuck not because they lack ability…
…but because perfectionism convinces them that imperfect action is failure.

In Session 2 of our webinar series, we’ll explore:
✔ Why perfectionism keeps you stuck
✔ The nervous system connection behind overthinking
✔ How to let go of “all-or-nothing” thinking
✔ Practical tools for embracing “good enough”

Saying “yes” when you desperately want to say “no” is exhausting.

People-pleasing can look like:
☑Replying immediately because you’re afraid of disappointing someone.
☑Overexplaining your boundaries.
☑Keeping the peace while silently burning out.
☑Taking care of everyone else while abandoning yourself.

And eventually, you don’t even know what YOU need anymore.

You learn to stay agreeable.
To keep others comfortable.
To minimise your own needs.

But constantly abandoning yourself comes at a cost.

In Session 3 of this powerful webinar series, we’ll unpack:
✔ Why people-pleasing feels so hard to stop
✔ The link between masking, guilt, and burnout
✔ How to set boundaries without shame
✔ Ways to honour your needs while maintaining healthy relationships

You’re not lazy.
Read that again.

If you’ve ever stared at a task for hours…
Avoided replying to messages you actually care about…
Or waited until the last minute just to finally “feel enough pressure” to act…

That’s not a character flaw.

Sometimes your nervous system doesn’t register urgency until the stress becomes unbearable.
Sometimes the task feels so big, unclear or emotionally loaded that your brain freezes before you even begin.

And then comes the shame spiral:
“I should be able to do this.”
“What’s wrong with me?”
“Why can’t I just start?”

I want you to know:
✔️There is a reason this happens.
✔️You are not broken.
✔️And there are practical ways to work WITH your brain instead of fighting it.

In Session 1 of our 3-part webinar series, we’ll unpack:
✔ Why procrastination happens
✔ The hidden link between overwhelm and avoidance
✔ How to start tasks without waiting for motivation
✔ Tools to break the freeze-shame cycle

A big thank you to Kathy Rautenbach and the wonderful team at Kidz Discovery for hosting such a warm and welcoming Parents & Coffee Morning ☕️

It was such a privilege to speak to parents on “From Meltdowns to Connection” — exploring how understanding a child’s nervous system, sensory needs, and emotional regulation can help us move from reacting to connecting.

Thank you to all the parents who attended, shared, reflected, and asked such thoughtful questions. These conversations matter, and it’s always encouraging to see parents showing up with such care and intentionality for their children. 💛
