The SAPS management in the Western Cape commends the swift and coordinated efforts of multidisciplinary teams following two brutal murder incidents in Gugulethu.

In the early hours of this morning, members attached to the Tactical Response Team, Provincial Crime Intelligence, Crime Intelligence Management and Analysis Centre, and the Serious and Violent Crime unit arrested four male suspects, aged between 24 and 30, who are believed to be linked to both incidents. The suspects were traced and apprehended at an address in Gugulethu.

The arrests stem from two separate but closely linked crime scenes in J Nontulo Street, New Cross. In the early hours of 23 March 2026, police discovered the bodies of a 25-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman in a backyard dwelling. The victims, who were visiting the premises for a social gathering, were fatally shot without warning.

In a second incident on 13 April 2026, detectives responded to another shooting nearby, where three victims were found. A 46-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were discovered inside a bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds while an unidentified male was found at the front gate with a fatal gunshot wound.

Through meticulous investigation and intelligence-driven operations extending across the Nyanga policing precinct and into Khayelitsha, the teams were able to piece together crucial evidence that ultimately linked the suspects to both crime scenes.

In a possibly related development, an additional 35-year-old male was arrested for the possession of a prohibited 9mm pistol with its serial number removed. The firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in the commission of these murders.
The suspects are expected to appear in court once charged. The investigation remains ongoing.

🚨 GUGULETHU CPF CRIME AWARENESS OUTREACH 🚨

On Thursday, 19 March 2026, the Gugulethu Community Police Forum (CPF), together with SAPS, LEAP officers, and Neighbourhood Watch/Community Ambassadors, carried out a meaningful crime awareness outreach in Sector 1, Europe Informal Settlement.

The initiative focused on direct, one-on-one engagement with residents—creating space for conversation, building familiarity and trust with local officials, and sharing informative pamphlets on extortion, r**e, and illegal fi****ms. The goal was to raise awareness and strengthen collaboration between the community and law enforcement in addressing ongoing challenges.
The outreach was warmly received, with many residents expressing appreciation and a strong desire for more initiatives of this nature, as well as increased visibility in the area.

COMMUNITY STATEMENT FROM THE GUGULETHU CPF ON RECENT IMPROVEMENTS IN COMMUNITY SAFETY

Greetings and compliments of the season,
The Gugulethu Community Policing Forum (CPF) wishes to acknowledge a noticeable decline in crime within our community. This progress has not come by chance. It is the result of consistent hard work, collaboration, and shared commitment from many hands and hearts. While there is still work to be done, we remain steadfast in our responsibility to restore and sustain peace, trust, and safety in Gugulethu.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our law enforcement partners, particularly the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Law Enforcement Advancement Programme (LEAP). Your tireless efforts, especially during the festive season, have not gone unnoticed. We thank you for your dedication and service, and we continue to pray for your strength, resilience, and protection as you serve our community.

Our gratitude also extends to all government departments, civil society organisations, and community-based initiatives that have contributed to keeping our
neighbourhoods safe. Through preventative programmes, safety interventions, and ongoing community engagement, your contributions have made a meaningful difference, and we recognise and appreciate your work.

To our safety and crime-prevention structures, those who patrol our streets, engage residents one-on-one, and respond selflessly at all hourswe salute you. Your
commitment often goes beyond duty, and your efforts continue to build confidence and reassurance within the community.

We further acknowledge our spiritual leaders and faith communities who have continued to stand in prayer and spiritual support, often behind the scenes. Your role
in nurturing hope, healing, and resilience is deeply valued. We encourage you to continue, as the journey toward lasting peace is ongoing.

Most importantly, we thank the residents of Gugulethu. Despite experiencing grief, trauma, fear, and anger, you chose not to give in. Your active participation, cooperation with authorities, and willingness to speak out have led to arrests and have played a critical role in improving safety in our community. Your courage and
unity remain our greatest strength.

This progress reflects a truly collective effort, and it must remain so. We encourage all stakeholders and residents to continue playing their part—whether in crime prevention, community development, safety initiatives, or active citizenship. Every role matters.

The Power of Men: Unity and Accountability

A powerful moment of unity and purpose unfolded in Gugulethu. On August 16, 2025, men from all walks of life came together at the Men's Imbizo determined to address the recent surge in sexual assault cases.

The Imbizo was more than just a gathering - it was a call to action. Men spoke openly about their struggles with trauma and abuse, and the importance of support groups and role models in shaping a better future. The room was filled with a sense of hope and determination as men vowed to stand together against violence and to be the positive change they want to see.

A poignant reminder that being a father figure isn't just about biology. As the men said, "We hear that children are without a father figure, and forget about the social father, who plays a key role. Such as uncles, brothers, etc. Let's recognize and celebrate the many forms of fatherhood and male mentorship that shape our communities.

Together, we can build a safer, more compassionate community for all.

The fight to reduce illegal fi****ms and ammunition in the province is ongoing, and members of the Maitland Flying Squad demonstrated their effectiveness by removing an illegal firearm and ammunition from the streets.

The members were conducting visible policing patrols in the Guguletu area on Saturday, 2 August 2025, when they noticed a suspicious-looking male who threw a bag into a yard and attempted to flee. The members responded swiftly and apprehended the suspect.

A 17-year-old male was arrested after members found a 9mm pistol with six rounds of ammunition inside the bag. He was detained at Guguletu SAPS on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 4 August 2025, on the mentioned charges.
