"I have never seen myself as disabled - only differently abled."

That simple belief has shaped Michelle's entire life.

Born with a congenital limb difference, Michelle's parents were faced with the incredibly difficult decision to amputate both of her legs while she was still a baby. But from that day forward, they made another decision that would define her future - they never treated her any differently.

Michelle wasn't raised to focus on what she couldn't do. She was encouraged to embrace every opportunity, overcome every challenge and live life to the fullest. That mindset has stayed with her throughout her life.

At Malcolm Freedman & Associates, we've had the privilege of walking alongside Michelle on her journey, providing prosthetic solutions that support her active lifestyle, independence and ambitions. Every fitting and every adjustment is tailored to help her keep doing the things she loves.

Michelle reminds us that ability is not defined by what you have lost, but by the determination, courage and outlook you choose every day.

Thank you, Michelle, for trusting us to be part of your journey and for sharing your story so openly. You continue to inspire everyone who has the privilege of knowing you.

πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ Small aches can be a sign of something bigger.

Do you find yourself:
βœ”οΈ Limping after a long day?
βœ”οΈ Avoiding certain activities because of pain?
βœ”οΈ Wearing out one shoe faster than the other?
βœ”οΈ Struggling with balance or stability?

These may seem like minor inconveniences, but they could indicate an underlying biomechanical issue.

At Malcolm Freedman & Associates, we don't just treat symptoms - we assess how your body moves to identify the root cause. From custom orthotics and bracing to advanced 3D posture assessments, our goal is to help you move comfortably and confidently.

Rigid carbon foot plates (full or ΒΎ length, Β± Morton’s extension)
These work by limiting motion and redistributing load rather than storing energy. Main indications:

β€’ Hallux rigidus/limitus β€” restricting 1st MTPJ dorsiflexion to reduce pain and progression
β€’ Turf toe and sesamoiditis β€” splinting the 1st ray through propulsion
β€’ Metatarsalgia, metatarsal stress fractures, and Morton’s neuroma (usually paired with a met dome)
β€’ Midfoot and Lisfranc arthritis or post-injury instability
β€’ Charcot midfoot β€” rigid offloading to limit rocker-bottom progression

Custom Supra Malleolar Orthoses (SMOs)

Fresh out of the workshop - a custom-fabricated pair of SMOs, made for one of our patients here at the practice.

An SMO is a lightweight orthosis that extends just above the ankle (the malleoli), giving control of the foot and ankle in the side-to-side plane while still allowing natural movement up and down. That balance is what makes it such a useful device.

We use SMOs to:
β€’ Stabilise a foot that rolls inward or outward, bringing the heel and forefoot into better alignment
β€’ Improve standing and walking balance in children and adults with low muscle tone, hypermobility, or mild neuromuscular conditions
β€’ Support more efficient, confident gait without the bulk of a taller brace
β€’ Provide a stable base for motor development in children learning to stand and walk

Because every foot is different, each device is moulded and built to the individual. A custom fit that off-the-shelf bracing simply can’t match. The goal is always the same: better function, better alignment, and a patient who can move more comfortably

πŸ“ See Beyond What the Eye Can See

During Scoliosis Awareness Month, we're highlighting the importance of early detection and accurate monitoring of spinal changes.

At Malcolm Freedman & Associates, we use advanced LiDAR 3D Posture Scan technology to assess posture and spinal alignment quickly, safely, and without radiation exposure.

Our LiDAR scan creates a detailed 3D image of the body's posture, helping us:
βœ”οΈ Detect postural asymmetries early
βœ”οΈ Monitor scoliosis progression over time
βœ”οΈ Assess treatment effectiveness
βœ”οΈ Support informed clinical decisions

Combined with our expertise in scoliosis management and advanced bracing solutions, this technology allows us to provide patients with personalised care and accurate treatment planning.

If you have concerns about your child's posture or would like a professional assessment, we're here to help.

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month, a timely reminder that when it comes to scoliosis, early detection changes everything.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that most often appears during the rapid growth years of late childhood and adolescence. Because it can develop quietly and painlessly, many curves go unnoticed until they’ve already progressed.

A few signs worth checking for:

β€’ Uneven shoulders or one shoulder blade more prominent than the other
β€’ A waist or hips that look uneven
β€’ One side of the back standing out when bending forward
β€’ Clothing that consistently hangs unevenly

Why early detection matters so much: when scoliosis is picked up while a child or teenager is still growing, we have a genuine window to intervene. Evidence-based custom bracing, combined with scoliosis-specific exercises such as the Schroth method, can slow or halt curve progression and in many cases meaningfully reduce the likelihood of needing surgery down the line.

Bracing is most effective during the growing years, which is exactly why a simple, early assessment is so valuable. Catching a curve early often means a far less invasive path forward.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs in your child, or in yourself, please don’t wait. A quick screening could make all the difference.

πŸ“ Book a scoliosis screening or posture assessment with our team and take the first step towards better spinal health.

πŸŽ‰ What an incredible weekend of running in our beautiful city!

A massive congratulations to every single person who took on the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. Whether you smashed a PB, ran your first 42km, or simply gave everything you had out there. You should be incredibly proud. πŸ…
Cape Town showed up, and so did you. πŸ‘

Now comes the important part ➑ recovery.
Your body has just been through something extraordinary, so listen to it. Rest, refuel, and give yourself the credit you deserve.

But if you're feeling more than just the usual post-race soreness; if there's persistent pain, stiffness, or something that just doesn't feel right, don't brush it off. It could be the perfect time to take a closer look at your gait and biomechanics. Small issues that were manageable during training can become bigger problems if left unaddressed.

Your next race starts with how well you recover from this one. πŸ’š
πŸ“ Book a gait analysis with us and let's keep you running strong.

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ To every runner toeing the start line at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon this weekend; this one's for you!

Early morning training, long runs, and sore legs have brought you here. Trust your training.
But as you push through those 42km, remember that your body is a finely tuned machine. How you move matters just as much as how far you move.

The angle of your stride. The roll of your foot. The way your whole body works together - these aren't small things. They're the difference between crossing the finish line strong or grinding through the final kilometres in pain.

Run the race you trained for. πŸ’ͺ

And if niggles have been slowing you down, don't ignore them, it means that your body is trying to tell you something.

Run strong. Run smart. Run pain-free. πŸ’š

Every patient is unique & so is every solution.

This patient was experiencing chronic knee instability and had already tried multiple off-the-shelf knee braces without success. While standard devices can work well for many people, they don’t always meet the specific clinical, lifestyle, and physical demands of every individual.

In this case, we designed and fabricated a custom carbon fibre caliper tailored specifically to her needs. The result is a lightweight, supportive solution that not only provides the stability she requires, but also allows her to move more comfortably and confidently through daily life.

At Malcolm Freedman & Associates, we believe the best outcomes come from combining clinical expertise with truly personalised care.
