You’re not unfit. You know you’re not unfit.
But climbing a flight of stairs leaves you breathless. Walking quickly to the car makes your heart race. Exercise that used to feel easy now feels like too much.
Before you blame your fitness, consider your iron.
Haemoglobin carries oxygen in your red blood cells. It is directly dependent on iron. When iron stores are depleted, haemoglobin production drops. Your blood carries less oxygen per breath. Your heart works harder to compensate.
The result: breathlessness on exertion that has nothing to do with your lungs or your fitness level.
This is one of the later-stage symptoms of iron deficiency, which means if you’re experiencing it, your stores have been low for a while.
Ask your doctor for iron studies, ferritin and full blood count. 🩺
