Yesterday I went for a very lame surf but I noticed that the water was warmer and has that summer smell to it! That first surf where I notice the change in the water smell always lifts me up. Somewhere there must be a scientific explanation for this.

The sense of smell and touch are 2 things that you can't post on social media or send in a WhatsApp and have such a profound effect on our well being. There's nothing better than walking in the fynbos, feeling and smelling the plants. How a protea can feel like either plastic or a small furry animal. The smell of buchu compels you to keep rubbing and some plants hit you with their scent before you even touch them.

(All this coming from a person who hates incense in a yoga class!!)

So have a smelly, feely day wherever you are.

The diaphragm is bit like an umbrella opening and closing and it's also a bit like a jellyfish! It's a really important muscle that can be strengthened. We'll be focusing quite a bit on the diaphragm in the next few classes, as Spring time is a time when the lymphatic system needs a bit more oomph after the sluggishness of winter. There are both gentle and stronger ways of engaging the diaphragm and well be doing a little bit of both.

I've been feeling rather bleugh lately, thinking I've just been working to hard and then I realised this is typical of Spring. You think you should be all perky like the birds, but you actually low in energy, sleeping badly and possibly have digestive issues. Not to mention a nose that has gone awol!
According to Ayurveda (the sister science of Yoga) Spring is Kapha season. Kapha has the qualities of heavy, slow, dense, dull, soft, oily, and cold, and it in particular gets to the chest.
I love a good gate and beam pose at anytime of the year as they are said to be beneficial for clearing the lungs and supporting immunity.
What else is good to do? Twists for digestion. Back bends for deep release and dynamic sequences to get the inner fire going.

So we'll be doing quite a lot of these and the one I love, Surya flow, will feature a lot. Come and see what it's all about...

After 2 months of little rain we’ve had a few days of fairly steady rain. Hardly a down pour but the mountain side is now looking fresh and springy now.

I found myslef looking up Afrikaans songs about Windmills as I was convinved there was one. Well I discovered there are many, but the one I thought was 'Aai Aia die windomp draai' turned out to be 'die witboskraai!' 🤣🤣

Oh well here I am being a Windpomp nevertheless and it is serving a purpose. The Dru windmill helps to open the muscles inbetween our ribs (intercostal). Although these are not primary breathing muscles, if tight, they can impede breathing.

If you'd like to now more and how to do this you'll have to come to one of my classes. 😆
We may sing some Windpomp songs if you like....

I was thinking the other day about all the things I have done. Believe me I have done a lot of different things, but most of them I have done on my own. It's really hard to be manage everything as a creative persons - prosecuting work, marketing, accounts, sales etc. Which made me realise that, although being a yoga teacher encompasses all that too, at least there is a supportive group around me. I have learnt so much and I can always ask, on a group, or a particular person.
Here's a photo of the network of Dru Yoga teachers around the world. I'm the little pint the bottom of Africa!
